GE Spacemaker JVM1631WB003

My microwave runs but won't heat anything. What could be wrong and how much might it cost to get it repaired? Would I be better off just buying a new one?

Same microwave, same problem. However it will heat if run for a long duration (20 minutes).

My microwave makes a buzzing sound, won't heat and has a burning plastic sound. It has a manufacture date of 2000. Wonder if it would be cheaper to buy a new one or get this one fixed. Same model #.

Generally, the most common causes of a failure to heat are:

- bad door switches or door switch mounts
- loose connection at the magnetron
- problem or loose connection on the control unit circuit board
- bad magnetron or other high voltage part

SOURCE: Removal of GE Spacemaker Microwave oven

1. Unplug the microwave. The plug is probably in a receptacle that is in the cabinet above the microwave, or in the wall above the shelf that is above the microwave.

2. Remove the two (or three) screws that go straight down through the bottom of the cabinet, or the shelf, into the top of the microwave. Have help in holding the microwave when you do this, as the front of the microwave will be able to fall down when the screws are removed.

3. Allow the front of the microwave to rotate down a little, then lift the back of the unit up about 1/2" to 1". At this point, the microwave will be disconnected from the mounting plate on the wall, so you can move it forward and carry it away.

Mmmm it's so easy,
First disconect the power, take the cover off, moslitly there would be 5 screws and two tab's on the top.
inside on the right hand side the magnetron it's a sylver box measuring about 4 in x 4 in x 5 in. It will have a plasic cover moslitly that would have to be remove first then on the magnetron there is 4 crews and one connector.
It should fall downard after.
If you have a power supply after the secondary , that may also be your problem.

Regards

Bob

Normally you have to separate the door panels (as shown in the attached photo) and then you'll see the previously hidden screws you need to remove.

Or you can watch a YouTube video (not a video I made) that demonstrates how it's done.

SOURCE: Replacement light bulb for GE spacemaker microwave

That model number doesn't look quite right, but nevertheless:

If there's no obvious removable cover over the bulb (and the owner's manual doesn't address it) some disassembly may be required.

Always unplug a microwave before removing or installing any bulbs.

If it's an over the range type, remove the vent grille across the top and see if bulbs can be accessed there. There may be a panel on the bottom covering the light(s), instead.

If not, chances are you'll have to remove it from the wall, then remove the outer cover. If so, the installation instructions are very handy, and it's best to have two people since the microwave can be heavy and awkward.

Once it's out of the wall, the outer cover (wrapper) will need to be removed, just as you'll need to do on a counter top model.

On a counter top model, be sure it's unplugged, but otherwise ignore the instructions above this paragraph.

The screws you need to remove should be pretty obvious, but a special driver (such as a T20H Torx type or GTXH20-100) may be needed.

Be sure to put all the screws back in the right holes, since some may be special grounding screws.

Bulbs can be had in most grocery stores, hardware stores, home improvement centers, and big box or department stores.

Many models use halogen lamps. You must not touch the new one with your bare skin, as the oils will shorten the bulb life.

SOURCE: My GE spacemaker microwave won't heat and makes an unusual sound

I have the same problem on my oven- model JVM1640WB and called an appliance repairman who is honest and reliable (I've used him before). He said the problem is with the electrode, to fix it is roughly $300. He recommended buying a new microwave rather than fixing it.

okay thats sounds like you have to take your microwave to a repair man.the HV capacitor can be open or the magnetron is bad these 2 components i mention are responsible for the heating of your microwave if they go bad..then your microwave wont heat.good luck.

GE jvm1631wb003 not heating has a funny machine smell

Most likely the magnatron has gone out and it runs around 90 bucks. If something is funny smelling then by all means don't use it unless you want a fire. If it were me I would replace the oven instead of throwing money nto a repair on a used microvave, they simply don't last as long as they used to. It won't hurt to take the cover off and inspect it for burnt wires that may have grounded out, if none found I would replace the unit.

I have a 1993 GE spacemaker microwave/range hood combo. Everything works except that for most of the day it did not heat the food. The turntable still worked and the oven still appeared to be running. Then...

In short yes it can happen again.

Intermittent operation can be caused by a door interlock micro switch, a weak capacitor, an intermittent wiring connection from heat or poor connection, a marginally performing diode or a sticking Magnetron. Except for the Magnetron all other repairs would be worth the expense.

Repair costs and parts for most everything else will be between $65 and $100.00 depending on the part(s) replaced. Replacing the Magnetron would cost more than 50 % of the total unit replacement cost.

GE spacemaker microwave does not heat food; fine otherwise.

Most likely the hi volt energy components. Usually the hi volt diode or hi volt capacitor. There is hi energy stores here so be careful or do not attempt it. A person skilled in electronics, tv repair, or microwaves can handle it . It is usually worth repairing. The other parts that could be the problem are the magnatron or the hi volt transformer; if so, you might think twice before repair (the price will be higher).Goodluck, Macgivor

GE Spacemaker Microwave XL1400- No heat

The problem could be anything from a defective control circuit board or a burned out magnetron tube. Either fix is quite expensive and you'll have to evaluate whether you think the repair is worth the cost vs buying a new microwave.

Bear in mind that a fixed microwave is still a used microwave. So to get an apples-to-apples comparison you have to ask yourself, would I pay $XXX (substitute XXX's with actual repair cost) for my used microwave?

2 1/4 year old GE Spacemaker XL 1850 Microwave doesn't heat

Check this website:

http://www.partselect.com/microwave+no-heat+repair.htm

It sounds like it is either the power diode, the high voltage capacitor or the magnetron. If it is the magnetron, it may not be worth fixing as these can cost well over $100.

Do you hear a buzzing sound?
