I have the HDMI cord plugged in to both laptop and TV. Computer will not detect

Try connecting the tv first... Or getting a new wire.
If those don't work you might want to try the monitor button. Most laptops have them as one of the function keys. Often looks like a projector or a square with some extra lines. Try it with the fn key depressed and also without as fn lock might be on.
But try those first two things first.

Broken Laptop screen, trying to connect to tv.

OK, you have to hit the FN (Function Key) + the F4 key to get the image to display on the TV. Press and hold the FN key then hit the F4 key and the image should appear on the tv if you have a VGA cable connected to the TV and to the HP Netbook.

Once you see your desktop on the tv you can get your files off my purchasing a USB Flash Drive of at least 8GB or 16GB (Just depends on how big your My Documents folde is). Then put the usb flash drive in the usb port and copy whatever files you want. Most of the things you want will probably be your documents, music, pictures and videos. These are normally found in the My Documents, My Pictures, My Music, My Videos folders. There is no need copying things like programs or other stuff because they will not work. They have to be installed thru the normal process to update the windows folders, settings and registry.

I would like you to tell witch keys i should used to get hp pavilion dv9000 pc lobtop screen to display on a samsung plasma monitor

I'm assuming you are connecting the laptop to the plasma screen with an HDMI cable. If you have done so, then have both the TV and laptop turned on. Log into the laptop with an account. After you have logged in, you can press the function key (Fn) and usually its F4 (the key has a picture of a square, this represents the external display connection) at the same time. The plasma tv should display what is on the laptop.
So, Fn + F4 should work.

I have held down Fn and F4 to restore my image to my lap top screen- many times, but the screen remains blank

If you have diverted the screen output to an external monitor or a TV, turn off the computer then disconnect the TV or monitor and turn computer back on again. The computer LCD is the default screen.

I have an Acer Aspire netbook that I want to hook to a projector. I finally got the right cord to hook it up, but it will not display on the projector screen.

One of the F keys will toggle between the Laptop Screen and the VGA output - look at the F keys and see if one has a picture of a screen often F4 / F5 - needs to be used with the FN key
FN key+ F4 Key (Or which ever key has the symbol on)
It will toggle between <laptop screen only><laptop screen and VGA output><VGA output only> Not necessarily in that order

Which function key allows to switch to tv

Hi there,
You need to press hold the FN key and press the F4 function key once which toggles the display to the External Display source like the television connected along with the LCD of the Notebook.
If the FN and F4 key combination is pressed again, the display will dissappear from the LCD of the Notebook and remain only on the external source.
If the FN and F4 key combination is pressed third time, the display will be back on the LCD of the Notebook and will not remain on the External display source.
Here are these details in other way :
First time pressing FN + F4    ---> Display on LCD and External display
Second time pressing FN + F4 ---> Display not on LCD but on the External Display
Third time pressing FN + F4 ---> Display back on the LCD and not available on External Display (Normal position).
Below are the details of what the Function keys in your DV1000 Notebook work :
fn + f1 Opens Help and Support Center fn + f2 Opens print options window fn + f3 Opens default Internet browser fn + f4 Switches the image among displays fn + f5 Initiates Standby fn + f6 Initiates QuickLock fn + f7 Decreases screen brightness fn + f8 Increases screen brightness fn + f9 Plays, pauses, or resumes an audio CD or DVD fn + f10 Stops an audio CD or DVD fn + f11 Plays the previous track or chapter on an audio CD or DVD fn + f12 Plays the next track or chapter on an audio CD or DVD fn + esc Displays system information.* (*To clear the system information display, press esc.)
Hope this helps...
