Re: usb not detected
Go to the control panel. Press the system button. Select device manager. Look at the Univeral Serial Bus controller at the bottom of the page and make sure there are no red "x" in there. If there are, you may need to add a usb driver from your computer. If that doesn't work, replace the USB card in your computer if your are working on a desktop workstation.

hi. the Driver of USB Controller is deleted (by a virus or something like that) and you need to install some drivers. so put the motherboard driver Disk in your drive and try to update the unknown device in your Device manager or install complete drivers of the Disk.
First, check for the power source, there should be a light indicator on the panel of the modem, else, power is a problem, check your adapter/power cable. Next, is use USB cable/USB port, try to use other USB cable/USB port. Another option is to check your Control Panel - Device Manager, see if there is a USB Modem currently installed. Remove/delete the device from your Device Manager. Going back to Control Panel, select Add Hardware. If still fails to detect, your Modem is dead. Good luck.
First of all try changing the usb port you are using I am sure that there will be more than one usb ports in your PC. After this try using another similar USB device. I mean if you are trying to plug in a Flash drive use a different one or If you are trying to connect an external Hard Disk (as it is obvious from the mass storage device marked with an x as you have pointed out). Try using a different External Hard Disk that you may borrow from someone checks will help you locate the problem. The reason why your USB device is not being detected by your PC must be the driver of the USB drive is out dated. Check the version of the USB Is it 2.0? or the driver might have been corrupt. You can download USB Mass storage driver from the following site. You can search for USB drivers on other sites also.
Your Dell has two front-panel and four back-panel USB 2.0 ports.
If NONE of the USB ports are working (and I'm figuring that you have tried other USB devices to eliminate a faulty USB device), this is usually caused by a drive letter conflict. The best way to resolve it is to remove all USB devices, then uninstall the USB controllers and hubs from Device Manager, then reboot and allow your controllers/hubs to reinstall.
If still a problem, use disk management to assign higher drive letters to the existing devices. For example, a permanently connected external hard drive and card reader can be set to V and W. Generally, newly connected flash drives will take the next available letter.
