Poulan Pro Clutch Removal

The teeth are worn on my chainsaw. It looks as though the clutch must be removed to change this part. How do I remove the clutch assembly?

Yes it is the drive sprocket that is worn. The thing that I'm not clear on is there is no nut on the clutch. Does that clutch assembly unscrew with some type of special tool?

Yes there is a special tool to engage on the clutch. You can get it from the Poulan web site - I think it is part number 31112 - cost about $5. Maybe you can get by without it, by using a screwdriver and hammer, but the tool was easy and risk free. You also have to stop the piston, as the previous poster said. I Googled how to do this, and the consensus seemed to be that it's easiest to stick rope down inside the cylinder, avoiding pusing it through the exhaust port. That worked like a charm. I used a hammer to hit a wrench on the clutch tool to break it loose.

Many thanks to the original answerer for getting me on the track to solving this.

If you mean the teeth on the chain, then you would not need to remove the clutch to change it.
Presumably you mean the drive sprocket is worn.
To do this, you need to stop the engine from turning over while you undo the nut.
You should have got a piston stop with the saw. Funny little flat plastic thing with round ends. You probably wondered what on earth it was for (I did). If you've not got it, you can improvise.
You remove the spark plug & insert one end of the tool, basically, this puts a lump of hard plastic on top of the piston so it cannot reach the top of its stroke.
This means you can undo the nut holding the clutch & sprocket to the crankshaft.
It will be left hand thread (I'm fairly sure).
Should be easy from there, but come back if you're still stuck.

I'm sorry, I'm not familiar with that particular saw.
Might need a special tool, might be a circlip of something you've missed.
    I'm afraid I don't know.

Poulan countervibe 3400 clutch removal

Hello DJ; I suspect she is has some age. The IPL I found (below) shows an outboard clutch and no chain brake.
http://www.ordertree.com/modelinfo/PWE/3400-Gas-Saw/75.3400-Gas-Saw.1.59.1.html it may be helpful with disassembly. Clutch detail is on the "Handle Bar Assembly" print.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cdqkIuVNUQc
1. Check the IPL for your saw to see if any special tools are needed. Poulan (Craftsman, Jonsered, Husky) clutch removal tool part number 530031112 if needed, is under $5 from many sources (look at the visible area between the weights if 2 small round sockets are visible you need the tool).
2. There are metal piston stops available, when square (almost never) with the piston top these work well, if not square they have been known to punch through the piston. I suggest a length of nylon rope (nothing left behind) be used instead of the piston stop (retain 6" ± so you can remove it). Make certain the piston is near the top of the cylinder before feeding the cord or it can fall through the exhaust port and damage the piston as it rises.
3. Most (99.9%) clutches have left hand threads (tighten it to loosen it). If a finger nail held in the thread and rotated clockwise comes off the shaft it is a left hand thread. If it pinches against the clutch it is a right hand thread.

If you have more questions or need additional help please reply below and I will get back to you. HTH & Good Luck.

How to repair Poulan Pro PP4018 with a bad clutch?

Hello Paul;
A link to a Poulan "PP4018 Gas Saw Type 2 follows (may not be your saw):
http://www.ordertree.com/modelinfo/PWE/PP4018-Poulan-Pro-Gas-Saw-Type-2/75.PP4018-Poulan-Pro-Gas-Saw-Type-2.1.59.1.html
If yours is not a "Type 2" all IPLs can be found here:
The IPL (exploded parts list) for your saw is beneficial with disassembly/reassembly:
Poulan.com
http://www.ordertree.com/modelinfo/POULAN-WEED-EATER/75.59.html
The dash number of your serial number is the type.

The 4018 link has an inboard clutch the drive link is changed as demonstrated here (chain brake must be released else you cannot remove the clutch drum):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YUbSIHMSSP8
The C-clips tend to fly when being removed. Please wear eye protection and exercise care.

If the actual clutch needs replacement continue with the remaining pieces as follows (IMO if changing the actual clutch the bearing should be replaced too):

The chain stops running even though the motor is running fine.

If the chain gets hot from lack of lubrication and/or being too tight it will bind and stop turning. When it cools off it will work again. Is this possibly the problem?

I need to know how to replace the sprocket on poulan model 4620 chainsaw

It is a Poulan PP4620(dependent on clutch adjuster - AV, AVHD, AVL or AVX)
Poulan.com/CurrentModels (Check in Illustrated Parts List (IPL) box)
http://www.poulanpro.com/node4043.aspx
Type just the model numbers (choose the suffix after the list is provided).

All 4 of these display an outboard clutch, use this as a removal guide:

This is the IPL (exploded parts list for a Poulan PP3516AVX Gas Saw:
http://www.ordertree.com/modelinfo/PWE/PP3516AVX-Gas-Saw/75.PP3516AVX-Gas-Saw.1.59.1.html
Oiler components are on the "Handle, Chassis & Bar Assembly" detail; items 34, and 61 through 65.

The oil pump and worm gear are behind an internal clutch. Use this as a starting guide for clutch removal:

  2. There are metal piston stops available, when square (almost never) with the piston top these work well, if not square they have been known to punch through the piston. I suggest a length of starter cord or nylon rope be used instead of the piston stop (retain 6" ± so you can remove it). Make sure the piston is near the top of the cylinder before feeding the cord or it can fall through the exhaust port and damage the piston as it rises.
  3. Everyone I have ever removed had a left handed thread (tighten it to loosen it).
If not a Poulan PP3516AVX the correct IPL can be found here: Poulan.com

The dash number of your serial number is the type.
If you use the IPL, take a photo or 2, and some notes you should not need a repair manual. If you insist on a manual please try an Internet search. It really is easier than it appears. If you have more questions you can reply below and I will gladly help. I hope you found this helpful.
