According to Canon you should:
1. Load paper correctly then press Black or Color button (MP210) 2. Press ON/OFF switch to reset the multifunction device 3. Remove Packing Material MP210 4. Reseat ink cartridge MP210 5. The MP210 may require repair
All steps can be done individually and if the error goes away the other steps don't have to be done. Hope this helps.

Also check that the head unit isnt obstructed from moving its full travel, I had one (an MP150) in parts and forgot to relatch a spring after removing an obstruction and i got this error. When you turn the unit on it moves its head to the complete left and if it cant do that it comes up with this error.
