My laptop has been switched off for a week. when i turned it back on, it cant find any wireless networks or my wireless router. i can only get online by manually plugging the yellow lead from pc to router....

- It seemed that there is no wireless network driver that is installed on the computer

- I also noticed that you can connect to the internet using a wired connection

- you can download the wireless driver using the computer manufacturer's support website (e.g support.hp.com if it is a hp laptop , support.dell.com if it is a dell laptop)

- if laptop is customer built you can go to start -> run -> msinfo32

- Under system summary-> components -> network you can find an idea what kind of wireless network driver you have

- and you can google and download the wireless network driver

Cant access wireless network

Wireless zero configuration is the feature of Windows XP that allows Windows to detect the available wireless networks and automatically connect to the most preferred wireless network.

It is enabled by the Wireless Zero Configuration service in Windows XP. It provides auto wireless network detection when you switch on the computer.
Follow the steps below to verify that the service is running:
1. Go to Start and right click My Computer. Select and click Manage.
2. Computer Management window will appear. Under Services and Applications, select Services.
3. Check for the service Wireless Zero Configuration. Make sure that it is started and that the startup type is set to automatic.
computer-management.jpg4. If it isn't, double-click the service. If the startup type is not set to automatic, click on the dropdown arrow and and change it to automatic. Click OK at last.
autostart-wireless-zero.jpgIf your wireless adapter driver does not support wireless auto onfiguration, you will notice the following:
- The network adapter does not appear as a wireless network adapter in Network Connections. It appears as a LAN adapter, similar to an Ethernet connection.
- The properties of the wireless connection do not have a Wireless Networks tab.
- You do not receive a Windows XP notification bar message indicating that wireless networks are available.
To get the most out of your Windows XP wireless experience, you should contact wireless adapter manufacturer to obtain the latest version of the drivers that support this XP feature.
If not, you must manually configure wireless network settings using the configuration software supplied with the wireless network adapter.

Bought a G Wireless USB Network Adapter, on install when it asks to plug it in the computer cant find it, then I get a error message that I need to instal the network card

To configure the wireless router, it needs to be connected to a computer with a LAN cable. Therefore the computer needs a LAN card and the LAN card driver installed and if you need to connect a laptop or computer to the router by wireless then the laptop or computer needs a wireless card plus the wireless card driver.
To configure the wireless router and wireless cards in the laptop or computer, please click on this link and follow my instructions :-

Have you installed tnhe drivers for your Network Adapter? Without the drivers the adapter is, as far as the computer knows, not there. Did you get a disk with your computer and/or adapter? If so install the drivers and problem should be solved.

Are you using Windows XP? If so, pls make sure that the Wireless Zero config utility is enabled:

Start>Settings>control panel>administrative tools>services>highlight 'wireless zero configuration utility>click 'start the service'.

Then you will need to go back and open the page for network connections, view available wireless networks, click on advanced, check box 'Use windows to configure my wireless connection', click ok.

After this, do you see any networks in that screen?

Laptop connection to Internet

In the simplest terms buy a longer ethernet cable or multiple ethernet cables and route them to several preferred areas.

However believing you probably would like to connect wirelessly

If your laptop has a built-in network card and originally came with Vista you may need to configure the network adapter and/or the router appropriately. There are often user guides for the both the adapter and router that will assist.

If your laptop has an built-in wireless adapter and you upgraded to Vista you should check the manufacturers website using support or drivers links to see if they have Vista software/drivers to support your built-in wireless adapter. IF not you may want to consider the purchase of a compatible add-on wireless adapter as noted below. And perform the appropriate configuration(s) as noted above.

Likewise if your laptop does not have a wireless adapter you may wish to consider purchasing an adapter. Care must be taken that the adapter is compatible with your computer, your operating system (Vista) and your wireless router (apparently WBR-1310).
