Well firstly if u wana recover ur data u have to make the external hdd power up but thats the major area of issue that its not powering up. the difference in plug doesnt make a difference cuz u can use the same plug, the voltage is same thorugh out in ur place from the substation. so it might be a possibility that when u connected ur hdd,the power ON/OFF switch was awredy ON IF hdd has one. so wat i feel is dat u can try opening the hdd and then connect the hdd to ur desktop with help of the BUS CABLE used to connect the HDDs in desktops. so in dat case i would suggest that u go through the manual of ur external hdd to see how to access the the casing in which the hdd is there.then if u happen to get thorugh n it turns on then u dont have to recover ur data. it would still be there. HOWEVER,its recommended that u dont try these things personaaly if u are'nt too tech savy. u shud consult a tech or a freind who knows abt this.

If you are lucky and there is no scracthes on hdd disks, you can recover your files but not at home. Go to a recovery data office in your area and they can test your hdd and tell you what to do next. Do not try to recover data with any software because you can damage irrevesible your hdd and lose all your data.

I have a seagate Freeagent Go 500gb and suddenly it is not recognized by my laptop.

Try with another PC, If still not recognising, then You have to open the Casing of your external drive. If you have any Warrenty remaining for this Drive, then let company people fix this. if no warrenty then Remove the HDD from the casing, Connect HDD to the PC with another External casing, and backup your Data. If no ditection with this method, then your HDD is Dead. Keep finger crossed best of luck

Click on the link below and then click on the "Fixit" button. Windows has a patch for all external devices not recognized by PC's including HD's. This is especially an issue for those who've recently installed SP3. Best of luck with your problem.

The disk is either damaged or the USB interface is damaged.
1) You could try opening the external case and connect the disk to your computer directly (Using IDE/S-ATA cables)
2) Format the HD and use data recovery software/service.

Seagate 500gb Free Agent Ex Hard Drive - Class Action siut

DO NOT buy a Seagate freeagent drive under any condition if it comes as a gift return it or re-gift to some one you don't like. Like so many others my 500GB external drive just quit working. Has only been plugged in about 6 times and then back into a cabinet to keep safe. In 10 years between 2 workstations 3 laptops and 4 external drives. The only drives that have ever gone bad are the Seagates and newer Maxators. I still have 4 Western digital drives that still work and get used in an external case for back up. They have never failed. Seagate should be responsible for data time and mental anguish.
