This is not a problem, this is a designed function to increase battery life. To adjust this, go to "vaio control centre", and then power management. Inside this is battery care, here you can adjust the settings or de-activate this function.

Ginko doesnt know what he is talking about... Firephox nailed it.. it is a setting the vaio control panel... i would recommend keeping it on.. it helps battery life.... but if you want a full charge for a road trip... turn it off.. charge and weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee %100 battery life.

You need to replace a battery, go to a computer shop that have replacement batteries with your laptop, and ask them to have a quick look, if battery stops at 80%, it should be replaced.

Note: if battery is still functional you can use the computer in this state, 80% charge is still enough to power your laptop for a good time.

Does your battery not start the computer up at all or it starts the computer up but something is wrong with the battery
Example the battery only charges to 80% then stops chargeing?
battery just can hold a charge at all etc.

Battery in my VAIO not recognized

The battery may be dead. How old is it? A battery has a "lifecycle" of sorts, just so many charge/discharge cycles.

if your Sony is older then 3 yrs I urge you to get a new battery. Make it last longer by draining the battery and charging it up everyday. This gives it a work out and helps it not get lazy.

Are you using a Sony Battery or an aftermarket cheaper version?
If your battery has been changed to a different brand then thats your problem and a whole problem in itself. Not saying there is anything wrong with that, but the Sony ISBmngr.exe file will stop the charging of any battery exept Sony's and put the system into hibernation mode. ( website with Info below)....
If you have the original manufacturers battery then go on.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is the typical charging-plug, jack, for laptops. Many times the plug itself is bumped over time and pushes on the pin in the center. The charging time becomes very short, if at all, because the connection is broken. Some are completely or because of the position of the wire holding it just right long enough to give a short charge.

32917b9.png With a Voltmeter ,check the output of the charger itself to be sure it is working properly.
Although VIAO has been out for a while & because the model was not listed here the age of the battery may also be in question. If the battery has shorted out and the charging unit & jack are fine then a bad battery that has shorted will cause you symptoms also. Try removing the battery and running on the charger alone.
Here are a couple of sites that I found that deal with Sony VIAO's

My Sony Vaio battery light remains orange

If the laptop battery is more than 3 - 4 years old then the battery could be worn out. Rechargeable batteries have a finite number of charge and discharge cycles and will lose their charge capacity over time, i.e. won't charge to 100% and gradually the charge reduces until the battery won't charge up at all.
OR The battery shows a 100% charge but when the adapter is disconnected the battery drops off to zero capacity in a very short time.
If the battery drops to an unacceptable charge level then the battery needs to be replaced.

Hi,
Most Sony Vaio have a utility installed in power management called Battery Care Functions.
You can check in Start/Control Panel/Vaio Control Panel
Expand Power Options and on the right hand side you should see a box with Battery Care Function tick box.Select it if not selected already.
Sony recommends that if you are not using the battery, you select this function to prevent the battery from charging to 100% as this may decrease the battery life.
The best is 80% or 50% and charge it fully only if you are going to use it.
Regards,
Purito

Hi Sony battery,
did you mean to say that you battery only remain at 50% and never exceed this amont ??
Normally all the notebook if you keep charging it should come up to 100%, but only a few case that will face the problem
1.problem with battery itself.
2.problem with ac adapter (I face very much problem here not continues power suplly)
3.problem with motherboard the module that deal with charging battery.
Goodluck,takecare.
