Question about GE 32GT660 32" TV

1 Answer

Is my TV broken or is my house haunted !!!

After my TV is turned on 5-60 minutes it will cycle the power and when it starts it continues. I turned the tv on and disconnected the switch board harness (7 wire (( 6 white 1 blue)) white connector) and the tv stays on until I disconnect the power cord from the wall. I was thinking it might be the remote input so i cut the blue wire and the white wire on the opposite side, however that didnt fix it. I am leaning to a shorted power swich??? I am and aircraft electrician and can use a meter but not much of a troubleshooter on a circuit board. I can read a schamatic and know the basics however not a tv repair man. LOL..... Any ideas??

Hello, I wish I could work on \ ride in a FA-!8 !!! I've repaired tv's for a long time and have never seen the switch pcb cause a set to shutdown after it is running. IR receivers very rarely go bad and when they do they just don't work i.e. no response to remote control signal. If the switch pcb has a switch that is stuck in the pushed in position ( because of a drink spill ) the set will not power on in the first place. Those 2 problems (besides a worn out switch) are the only problems I've seen with the switch (pwr\vol\ch) pcb. I think it was just a coincidence that the set stayed on for you when you disconnected the switch pcb.
Now that I've said what it isn't I should FINALLY tell you what I think it is. I tend to run on and on sometimes. Anyway, you have a unit that is NOTORIUS for having bad high voltage transformers or flybacks as the old tv guys call them. I'm not old... yet!! The transformer will start to draw more current than it should and the protection circuit that monitors that current will activate and the microprocessor will shut the unit down.
I could be wrong ,of course, but that's all I can say without seeing the unit and that is very common for your set. You can get an inexpensive flyback for your set through astimag.com or you can get an expensive GE\RCA part. Asti Flybacks are just as good...I'd say better ...GE\RCA's go bad!!! Good Luck! If you want help trouble-shooting, get your manual free by googling your model # and the words " free schematic download " and I can help. I see your email address. Just come back here and let me know... I will email you from my mailbox. I can't list it here. Once again, Good Luck!

My tv cycles off and on ,by itself.

Try a power drain to see if can keep the TV on consistently:
1. Unplug the product's power cable so the device is not grounded to the house. 2. Press and HOLD the product's own power button for 1 minute to drain the capacitors. 3. Plug the product back into a wall outlet and try to turn it on.
Note: This procedure works with battery operated devices as well so remove the batteries and hold down it's power button.  Electricity can remain in capacitors and on circuit boards enough to prevent normal functionality. By clearing the residue electricity, your product will have a fresh start and many times this will resolve a buggy or non-responsive device that appears to be dead.
If the TV continues to turn off and on after this, it would appear that there is an issue with the TV's power supply as it may be on it's last legs.

TV Cycles Power ON and OFF.... Is my house haunted or Just have a broken TV.....

I'd say you're right on track. You'll probably have to replace the board. I doubt you can get replacement parts even if you know exactly what it is. I know it sucks but that's the way the industry is today. Good luck.

Worn-out capacitors in the power circuit might cause this kind of problem.

Power Outage

The power supply, or one of the scan amplifiers has some damage. The set will require shop service.

More than likely the set was going to fail anyways... Turning off the power source to a TV should not do any kind of damage.
