Hp 5150 deskjet downward arrow flashing printer...

I have followed all instructions from manual about correcting  flashing arrow alert: No  paper jam, reconnecting printer without going thru surge protector, etc., etc.   Printer worked fine til I replaced the color cartridge (hp 57). Since then printer has not worked and arrow won't stop flashing yellow.
Printer about 4 years old and this is my first problem. Help?
