Odor in fridge

There has been an odor in the fridge for several months. Smells sort of like lighter fluid or a chemical smell. We have completely cleaned and scrubbed inside both ther refrigerator and freezer {where the odor is stronger}. Food is beginning to taste like the odor. A sears repair man checked it out and couldn't smell anything, cleaned underneath and told us to put a box of baking soda in, We did- still smells.

Sweet chemical smell from frig and freezer. Repair man says that coolant is oderless so it is not likely a coolant lea. Problem is that it is definitely coming from the inside of the refrigerator and freezer. .

Probably getting a new Fridge-mother doesn't want to continue to deal with repairs. Thanks anyway.

Chemical odor...

Hi,

HERE ARE 10 EFFECTIVE WAYS TO REMOVE THE BAD SMELL:

1. CharcoalCharcoal is on top of my list as it is one of the best absorbent agents that can absorb and soak up the bad odour. Charcoal is also widely used as water filters and in most odour removing commercial products. You can put a medium-sized chunk of charcoal inside your smelly refrigerator for instance, and leave it there for a couple of days. You will notice that it can effectively remove the bad smell.
2. Baking SodaBaking soda is also a good absorbent. Put a generous amount of baking soda in an uncovered container (the size of the container depends on the size of the confined area) and leave it for several days. Remove the baking soda and replace it with new one and leave it for a couple of days. Continue replacing the baking soda until it has cleared the bad smell.
3. Lemon or Lime PeelJust put some lemon or lime peels into an uncovered container and leave them inside the confined area for a couple of days. The citrus smell will naturally replace the bad smell.
4. Pandan Leaf (also known as Pandanus or Screwpine)It is easy to get pandan leaf in tropical countries as it is widely used in Southeast Asian cooking to add aroma to dishes. Its pleasant aroma also acts as natural air freshener. Just take a few strips of the pandan leaves and tie them into knots. Place the leaves inside the confined space and leave them until the leaves withered or dried up. Replace the leaves regularly until the smell goes away.
5. Vanilla Essence Pour several drops of vanilla essence on a couple of cotton wools. Toss the cotton wools inside the confined space such as your wardrobe. Leave them for several days and you will notice that the area smells nice.
6. Mint Extract If you favor neither the smell of citrus nor vanilla, you can perhaps use mint extract instead. Pour several drops of mint extract on a couple of cotton wools. Toss the cotton wools inside the confined space and leave them for a couple of days.
7. Fresh Ground CoffeeGround coffee has a nice, crisp natural aroma. Just put about a cup of ground coffee in a flat, uncovered container. Place the container inside the confined space for several days. If the bad smell is extremely horrible, put more ground coffee. The area will smell of fresh coffee for many days.
8. Tea BagsIf you don't like coffee, you can use tea bags instead. Just place 2-3 tea bags inside the confined space. The tealeaves in the bags will not only absorb the bad smell but also will release the natural aroma of tea.
9. Orange and ClovesGet an orange and poke it with sharp objects like needle or fork to form small holes. Place each of the cloves inside these small holes until most of the orange surfaces are covered. It may look like a hedgehog with the cloves jutting out of the orange fruit. Leave it in the confined area for a couple of days. The area will smell nice with the said combinations.
10. Old Newspaper and Slices of BreadOld newspaper and slices of bread also work wonders in absorbing the bad odours particularly inside the refrigerator. Just place some crumpled old newspaper and two slices of bread (uncovered) inside your refrigerator and leave them for two days. Replace them (especially the bread) regularly until the bad smell is removed.

You can also use the combination of any of the above tips together, to effectively remove bad smell. Try those tips and you will say goodbye to bad smells forever.

Goodluck,

Bad odor in refrigerators...

Many face the problem of bad odor in refrigerators. Here are few simple tricks to get the problem of bad odor solved:

  1. Keep an open box of baking soda inside the fridge it will absorb the foul smell.
  2. Place newspaper made into balls all over your fridge and freezer so that it is completely covered.Spray the newspaper with water until it is completely wet.
  3. Allow the fridge to run as normal for five days. During this time, the combination of evaporating water and paper will soak up the nasty smell. It should be noted that you will have to turn your freezer to the lowest setting to avoid getting frozen.
  4. Buy some freshly ground coffee.Dump 1 to 2 cups of the coffee grounds on a large plate and spread them around. Use multiple plates if the smells are extreme.Place the plate on the center shelf.Close the refrigerator for 24 to 48 hours.Dispose of the coffee grounds.
  5. Cut a lemon in half and put it in there - it will absorb the smells and make it clean smelling.
  6. Last but not least ....Empty contents of fridge wipe out with warm water and a little lemon juice then cover a tray or plate with kitchen foil and fill with charcoal put in fridge over night and the charcoal absorb es all nasty ouders then in morning remove plate or tray.It should have no smells at all.
Thank you for this opportunity t post few tips which i know. I think all the above are home made tips and anyone can try it out who are facing the problem of bad odor in their refrigerator..

Metallic or medicinal odor from fridge

Sounds like the smell of fruit that has gone bad. There is no odor per se that a refrigerator or freezer "manufactures".......Freon is sealed and is odorless--that's the only kind of fluid/chemical that a fridge condensor circulates. Look for some food that has gone "south" first.

Fridge has chemical smell

The smells are being pulled in through the air intake from the fridge from the chemicals they used on the floor. As the coating cures, the odor will end. As for the damage to your food and drinks? I would assume if the food tastes like the chemicals, I would avoid eatting them if you do not like the taste )

Refrigerator smells strange

I may have found the problem. I pulled out the Fridge again. The odor was in the water pan.

What I found was that the cooling grills in the front was caked with dust. I vacumed this area but it was not until I got down with a flash light and saw this issue. I took a small duster that uses static to pull the dust out. There was a lot. I will see if the smell starts up again.

Ice and Refrigerator and Freezer smell like alcohol chemical

I believe that you might have a coolant leak causing the chemical odor. You really should get it checked out by a fridge repair-person because it's not healthy to breathe in the fumes.
