This is unfortunately a common problem with PS3's. There's not much you can do aside from sending it back to Sony. Hopefully it's still under warranty so they will fix it for free. If they give you trouble about not having the receipt, just be persistent and they will give in. It's the way of all customer service centers. I just sold my broken PS3 because my system was out of warranty. I guess I'll be playing everything on 360 now.
