If you or a friend can acquire an external monitor for a short while, you will be able to at least separate the problem into two areas; if the test monitor shows normal colors, then the display section of your laptop has failed. If the external monitor shows the same color problem, then the video processor has failed.
With this knowledge, you can start making calls or emailing to determine what the repair cost would be.
Since the video processor is probably a part of the motherboard, this might entail a motherboard replacement since replacing chips by hand that were installed by robots may not be practicable. If it is a display driver failure, the entire display might have to be replaced for the same reason as mentioned.
In my mind, the display replacement might be a tad less expensive but not by much.
There is a slim possibility that the driver software has gotten corrupted so if swapping displays still doesn't conclusively tell you where the problem is, you might try removing the driver from the Device Manager and rebooting. Win should 'find' a 'new device' and reinstall the driver.

Acer apire one everything on the screen looks like night vision

Color Depth, Hue Intensity, Contrast, Brightness etc are all controlled and controllable by the Graphics Settings.

Right click on the open desktop -> Properties/Personalize -> Settings/Display Settings -> Advanced -> Graphics Adapter -> adjust the color settings -> Apply -> OK -> restart computer -> if problem is not resolved uninstall the Video/Graphics/Display Driver from Add or Remove Programs -> Reinstall Video/Graphics/Display Driver from the Driver CD of from the Support/Download page of the Acer website (see below for the link) -> restart the computer and test again -> if this does not resolve the problem, then you may have a faulty Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) Panel Power Inverter of the LCD Panel itself might be faulty. Either can be replaced. The Inverter is relatively inexpensive, a replacement LCD Panel, a little more.

To test for a faulty screen, connect your notebook to an external Desktop Monitor, using a standard VGA Cable -> press and hold the Fn key bottom left of your keyboard -> press the Function key at the top of your keyboard with the image of the two monitors on it -> release both keys -> if the image sent to the external monitor is correctly color balanced and you have tried adjusting the Graphics Settings and reinstalling the Driver, then the fault is likely to be in one of the components of the LCD Screen and you should take the notebook to a repair centre to test test and replace the faulty component(s).

Try an external monitor. If that works its probally the inverter again. There is probally an underlying cause that is taking out the inverter. Possibly a bad resister that powers the inverter or that long skinny board the inverter plugs into could have a bad component on it. I would change both to be safe. Of course the inverter you put in could of been bad too. Stranger things have happened.

My HP DV5 1159se was working fine last night and then this morning I go to turn it on as usual and a blank white screen comes up. The start tones are the same and I could even type my password in to log on...

If the inverter board or the back light behind the screen were bad your display would be blank, "but windows would be visible barely" the white screen indicates a bad LCD and must be changed. It is also possible the video cable from the motherboard to the screen has come loose and will need to be reseated back into place to fix it.

My view sonic monitor gat very dark. can still see but very dark. do I need a new monitor ? was fine last night and this morning had problem. I didn't shut down over night.

It sounds as though either the backlights or the inverter(which supplies power to the backlights) has gone. If you can still see the desktop but only if you look closely and it is very dark, then the monitor will need repairing or replacing. If it is the invertor it can be done at a resonable cost - if it is the backlight it would probably not be worth repairing. Also it will cost just for an engineer to check it out.

LCD flashing

If the screen is just flickering on and off then chances are that there is a loose connection on the inverter, this type of fault can happen over time and is mostly due to opening the lid and closing it.
If you want to tackle the problem yourself the inverter is located at the bottom of the screen and is hidden behind a piece of frosted plastic.
For most people this is a fairly easy job as it just involves removing the screen bezel (plastic screen surround)

If you see a dim image on the LCD screen it means you have a backlight problem.
Connect an external monitor to the laptop and power it up, if you see a clear image on an external monitor, this means your video card is OK.

Dim image and/or dark display on the laptop's LCD screen indicates a faulty LCD backlight and it could be the inverter that supplies high voltage to the CCFL lamp or it is the CCLF lamp is nearly burnt out or burnt out, most likely this is the case.
The inverter can be replaced easily but the CCLF lamp is more time consuming and requires soldering skills.

HP Pavilion ze2000 Monitor is dim

Yes, this is what happens when the backlight goes out.
This will give you an idea of what is involved in replacing the backlight. You can find a replacement backlight here, or on ebay, just take your current backlight(s) out, measure it or them, and buy replacements of the same measurements. It doesn't have to be for the same model laptop as long as the CCFLs (cold cathode florescent lamp) are the same size.
