Thank you for your prompt reply. I solved the problem by simply un-installing the device from my PC and running the installer againg. It did take quite a while to download, but I finally got it to work.

hi i share your pain samsung is a foolish fone befor i could get a game on it it took me time , any way go to samsung website get the correct samsung pc studio, if that doesnt work send pictures to your memory card and copy to ur phone, ty nigeria
First, Copy the photos (or set as default) to the sd card. (can do all at once from the 'file' icon.)
Connect the phone to the computer and choose "mass storage device" when asked.
The phone will now appear as a 'removeable drive' and you can do as you wish after that.
Well if you have a memory card in your phone, you can put it into the adaptor and put that into your PC (if it has the memory card holes).
Other than that, you should have had a cable when you bought the phone which you plug into the same bit as you put your charger, and the other end into a USB socket.
Then go to My computer, and it'll be in one of the drives. (or you can download the Samsung software to view pics on).
The other alternative, is to get a bluetooth adapter for your PC and send them via bluetooth.
