Try re-threading the machine. Also, when you put the thread trough the clear plastic part on the top left at the back, swish it back and forth a couple times before bringing it all the way through. It is a little tip someone told me and seems to work wonders.

I actually found that the thread was releasing from the roll too quickly, the machine comes with a little netting that can go over the reel of thread and it keeps it tight until pulled by the machine. once i put the net on never got the error again

I ran into this problem as well. Root cause was that I threaded the top thread incorrectly. There is an illustration on top of the sewing machine that shows you the proper way to thread it. Once I re-threaded properly, the problem went away.

My new machine sewed fine in cotton material, but I am having trouble sewing on a silky top.

Machine settings usually need to be re-adjusted when the project materials change, ie the needle size & type, the type/weight of thread, the presser foot pressure, the thread tension, the stitch length, etc. Sewing woven cotton is very different from sewing silk or chiffon. Test on scraps of the fabric before actually sewing on the garment. Even adding tissue paper to the stitching will help prevent fabric puckering.

I would like to know how to set the machine up for polyester/spandex material

You need a ball point size 70 or a jersey 70 if you can get it. Stitch length 2.3 to 2.5. Re tension, just normal tension setting. If the machine is sewing an evenly balanced zigzag on regular cotton fabric, then tension is fine. If you find the straight stitch on your fabric pops under stretch, then try using a very small zigzag to put some flexability into the seam.

While sewing the thread will break

Take a small piece of material and take several practice runs of a straight stitch. If the cotton breaks try adjusting the small tension wheel (numbered 1234 etc) . To decrease tension turn to a lower number. Adust as necessary until you get a satisfactory stitch.

Please could you tell me what the digital reading should be for a straight stitch when sewing with cotton materials and cotton thread?

I could not find any reference to this at the BL website. You can download a free manual from the site if you need one.

Thread bunches up from bobbin feed.

Remove the needle plate and clean the feed dogs there could be fluff gathering.
Check your needle is not damaged.
