Panasonic VDR-M50 - DVD RAM (by 2 users)

By M0nica L - usenet poster

I can make some use of the DVD-R but almost no use of the DVD RAM. I'd love to know how you were able to use the software provided for the RAM disks. See my experience below.

Does anyone have any experience here that could help me out? I simply want to get the files from the DVD RAM to my PC in a format that I can edit.

The DVD-R disks are fairly straightforward. They can be played in my DVD video player and my PC, and I can use Fleximage DVD-to-AVI for conversion to a file format I can use for editing. The camera creates sequencial files for some reason and this software will only convert the first file. Very frustrating! I ended up playing the DVD-R on my DVD video player and using the video cable, transferred the video back to a DVD RAM disk on the camera. See DVD RAM problems below. The software that came with the camera has so far proven worthless.

I have struggled with the DVD RAM disks. They are fabulous to use in shooting and editing on the camera but I cannot for the life of me get the DVD format converted off the DVD RAM. They cannot be read by my DVD video player or my DVD drive on my PC. I can see and even transfer the files to the PC through USB but for some reason, the DVD-to-AVI software will not recognize the files that were recorded and I cannot use the file format from the DVD RAM for anything other than viewing the video. Again, the software that came with the camera has so far proven worthless.

Same story here.

This Panasonic VDR-M50 is a pretty worthless camcorder.
I have tried numerous software applications and still no dice.
Next time I will read consumer forums before I buy.

You need to plug in the camera via USB so it reads as a drive w/ the DVD-RAM disc inserted. If it reads the camera as a DVD burner, install the DVD-RAM driver and reboot then try again. Once you can see the DVD RAM, explore the drive and find the DVD_RTAV directory, then fine the .VRO file - this is quite the same as a VOB file. copy and paste this file to your hard drive and rename the file to xxxx.mpg - the file will now be editable by pretty much any software you have. good luck.

Rip the DVD-RAM .iso image to your hard-drive using DVD Decrypter. Next, mount the image using Daemon tools. Finally, convert the video to .avi using AutoGK. All freeware software solutions to your problem.

DVD-RAM is the least compatible DVD format on the market. I think you need to add a DVD drive specifically made for DVD-RAM to do what you want.

Good luck.
