There are a couple of things that come to mind, poor solder connections on the main board, or the audio output ic has a thermal related issue causing it to break down under load, a tricky problem to prove.
When's the last time you cleaned the heads AND capstan? (Google it) Look at the edges of your tapes. Any irregularities will show up as warble or dropouts on the left channel. Also treat and store the tapes like you want them to last forever. It's pretty much covered on the cardboard insert that comes with a blank tape.
Many portable 'boombox' recorders do not include a microphone for recording ambient sound, but can only record from one internal source to another, like radio or CD to Cassettte. Some do include an input jack for microphones or other audio sources, but you'll need to check your device's specs/ports to be sure.
That is an electronic problem. Probably a just-about-to-break cable in the motor of the CD drive, that sometimes causes a short and turns off the unit, or sometimes makes it to comport erratically and produce the buzzy sound. If you have electronics knowledge, then you may open and check the wiring harnesses. If don't, take it to your local electronics repair.
actually you can not lubicate the cassette players. it has to do with a belt inside. your players may need to be demagnitized. i would go to radio shack or electronic store and try a cassette cleaner/demagnitizer and see if that solves the problem. i would even try different batteries or a ac power adapter if you have the plug. some batteries make units run slow. i would even get a can of dust cleaner that you find in the electronics section. you spray it in and it cleans the inside of the dust that may be inside.
The protect message indicates that there is a problem with the final stage of the amplifier section. This unit will require repair as a reset will not clear this. There is an audio amp IC inside that needs to be replaced. Figure on about $15 or so for the part.
Lennox Electronics has declared bankruptcy and is stealing people's money but not telling anyone. I would take this product back to Walmart immediately and demand a refund. If you purchased the item more than 15 days ago then you are out of luck.
Walmart is not doing anything to help its customers in this matter.
