My computer came from a rent to own store and when I got it after a time I decided to add some a resume application to the computer which didn't work so then I thought I could delete some of the applications I had already on the computer, which I must of deleted a application which was the sound. And it is a possibility not having an instruction book that by through the computer apps I may hit a wrong key on something in the control panel.

Tip

Winxp Applications Startup Time, Decrease your Applications startup time...

By default, Microsoft includes the /prefetch:1 switch to speed up it's Windows Media Player application start time. This switch can be used for other Windows applications and also many third party programs.

Example #1

You have AOL installed on the computer. Complete the steps outlined below to add the /prefetch:1 switch to AOL's Target path.

1. Right Click on the AOL shortcut and select properties from the menu.

2. In the Target: Field add the /prefetch:1 switch to the very end of the path, like this: "C:\Program Files\America Online 8.0\aol.exe" /prefetch:1 and then click ok.

Now start AOL. It would load at least 50 times faster than ever before.

Example #2

1. Go to the Start butoon/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools

2. Right Click on System Restore and select properties from the menu that appears. Add the /prefetch:1 to the Target Path entry so it look like this
%ystemRoot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe /prefetch:1 and Click ok.

Now System Restore will start immediately when executed.

Note: This switch will only work with some programs. Others will return a message saying the programs. Others will return a message saying the program in the target box is invalid. Just remove the switch.

Good luck!

THe Presarion keeps telling me that it is running out of space. What should I do?

Add another hard drive and/or compress the drive that you have. If using XP, click on "My Computer" to open it, right click the "Local Disk (C:)", select "properties" and check the box next to "compress drive to save space", then click "apply".

You can also go into My Documents and delete any large files that you don't need. You can go to: start > settings > control panel > Add or remove programs, and uninstall any programs that you don't need, too.

Also, don't forget to empty the recycle bin.

That is an old computer, so, if you decide to add another hard drive you will need a PATA drive as opposed to a SATA drive, such as one of these: http://www.compusa.com/applications/category/category_slc.asp?CatId=134&name=ATA-IDE-Hard-Drive&

You will have to make master and slave settings on the drives. Here is a tutorial and how to make the jumper settings: http://freepctech.com/pc/001/installing_ide_devices.shtml

Try a store like Goodwill. You might also visit a computer store which recycles computers for customers. They most times would be happy to donate an older machine that will work for you.
