Got the sick notebook with WIN XP Pro, but the hard drive had been reformatted and now after the initial screen, the message above is displayed. I have no access to Windows and don't have original WIN XP disks. Used first Recovery disc from another HP Pavilion (both the ones made by me and those I purchased directly from HP) and get the message that those discs don't support the Compaq model, so the CD/DVD drive is working. Where is that BOOTMGR file supposed to be?. How can I fix the problem? I repeat, I have no access to Windows.
This may be due to the reason that your Compaq model is only Vista or Win7 Compatible.I didn't get your question properly but as you're having no windows or DOS in your machine. All you need is a Bootable Windows Disc and a working DVD rom to get this done.Cause commands or anything else will require that and even if you fix it with some tricks. Some Other file missing message may appear. But if you just want to push yourself. Normally are Booting files are in the root folder in my case it's in C:\ like NTLDR BOOT.ini BootSect.dos so try to access your root drive.

You'll need a copy of the OS. You can only get drivers off compaq.com. If you don't have the original DVD, sometimes there is a partition dedicated to giving you the original OS back on your hard-drive (and it's a more modern way of doing it). Press F12 or any other option it gives you to boot to when your computer starts, and select anything that looks like a restore. This often works well on newer laptops.
If you don't have an OS, nothing will happen.

Your problem is not your OS its your hard drive, when hard drives go bad (bad sectors) they will almost always corrupt the OS. You could pay someone like 50 bucks to run a diagnostic on your hard drive but that is about half the cost of a new one. I would replace that and I am positive it will fix your issue. Unfortunately there is no way to see this coming.
SOURCE: Hi, I have a HP
You can't see any HDD's when trying to install because your BIOS system was set the IDE controller to an AHCI, you can set this to native IDE and windows XP setup will read a HDD's..
If you need set the IDE controller to AHCI you need Intel AHCI controller driver for your system, you can see it during installation process to press F6, you must use floppy diskette and put the driver onto it.
Another way to install AHCI driver is Integrate the driver into Windows Installation directory..See here for more details..

Appreciate all your efforts to help and sorry for the late and long answer.
\system32\hal.dll. Please re-install a copy of the above file." I guess this message is originated after the Compaq tries to read the copy of Win XP, (which indicates that the CD\DVD drive is working). I checked that CD and it contains the " i386\HAL.DL_" file with 52 KB, bur it may be corrupt. Checked also my Pavilion dv9005 and it has a "system32\HAL.DLL" with 132 KB.. Tried to drag and drop the file to replace the alleged corrupt one, but could not finish.
To Kabeer Dass.- The Compaq was working with WIN XP Pro, but was password protected to get in; that's why the hard drive was reformatted in the hope of starting anew. I think you are in the right track by suggesting the bootable Windows disc. I have a copy of Win XP from a friend. I also have received from Microsoft directly, the Security update with SP1, the Windows XP SP 2, the Windows XP SP3, plus the System Recovery DVDs purchased from HP, although all these discs are for my HP Pavilion dv9005 and I think all of them are bootable. Besides, I also have an HP Pavilion dv5 with Vista and another HP Pavilion g7 with Win 7, but no discs, only their applicable Recovery partitions, which I have used before, with each one .
Yes, I proceeded with other suggestions and more error messages appeared., however, I was able to solve some of them and now the latest is: "WIndows could not start because the following files is missing or corrupt::
Thanks for the other suggestions which are already one year old and probably were brought automatically into the thread by the FixYa system.
