I turned my laptop off via the on/off button insted of the 'shut down' method and as a result I can't get into my account. I have tried pressing the F2 button on start-up and have went through all of the 'safe mode' options, but this hasn't solved the problem. Can you help please?

Re: unlocking laptop from safemode.
I do not claim to be any great font of knowledge when it comes to laptops so I can tell you basically what a desktop would do:
During the re-booting process I hold down ctrl/F8 or just F8 to get the options menu with safe mode on it,. After I run Scandisk it there are no errors, I re-boot the computer and hold down F8 to run in "normal" mode again.
This may be Greek to you-like I said, I don't know.

THis is from the HP tech chat thing, and it seems to be working. I did method 2 and browsed to the file: _________________ 1. Click Start 2. Click Shutdown 3. The "Shut Down Windows" dialog box will be displayed 4. Select "Shut Down" from the me 5. Start the system again. 6. When the Red Compaq logo appears press F8 repeatedly until prompted with the "Windows Startup Menu" 7. Select option 6 (Safemode Command Prompt) by pressing the down arrow key until Safe Mode Command Prompt is highlighted 8. Press Enter 9. At the C:\ prompt type D: and press Enter 10.At the D:\ prompt type CD CPQS and press Enter 11.At the D:\CPQS prompt type XQR press Enter Method 2: 1. Click Start 2. Click Run 3. In the "Open" box type C:\CPQS\QUICKSR\FRESTORE.EXE Performing these steps should resolve this issue.
This issue can be hard or software or even both. I suggest troubleshoot on the software side first. Try going into safemode. To do it, tap F8 while you see the ACER logo during start up. Then select SAFEMODE. If the computer is not shutting down on its own in SAFEMODE, then its a software issue. You can back up your files while in SAFEMODE. After backing up your files, you can reinstall Windows using the reinstallation disc that came with the computer. Goodluck.
Assuming you know how, press the on button and hold it for more than five seconds -- your windows will shut down and computer will turn off. Then restart it in safemode, use SytemRestore to go back to a good restore point. That should get your Start button back to where it was when it worked.
If your system only boot up in safemode, you should try a Clean Boot of your machine to help given steps,
1- click Start, and click Run. The Run window appears(From the safemode desktop)
2-. In the Open box, type msconfig and then click OK. The System Configuration Utility appears.
3- go to the General tab and click Selective Startup radio button.
4- Un-check all options with the exception of "Load System Services" & "Use Original BOOT.INI".
5- Click Apply, and then click Close.
6- When prompted to restart the computer, click Yes.
Now if it boot up in normal mode you should get a message to the effect of the changes you just made in msconfig, don't worry about it, but make sure you put a check in the box that says "Do not show me this message again" and click the "OK" button.
if it is an xp machine this should be easy. hold the power button down till it shuts off (you must shut it off this way) then start it again it should at some stage of booting show an error recovery screen it will give you the options, start in safe mode, safemode with networking and so on, select start in safe mode and it will log you in once it loads the desktop will be a black screen with safe mode written in each corner open the control panel from the start menu and go into user accounts and delete the password
if u forgot ur password or if it got messed up in the file system you can try a repair installation or a system file reinstall using your operating disk (you will not lose any of your programs or files
You can slove it from the safemode .There are few methods to slove your problem.
Switch on the system.then press F8 go to safemode and after enter into the windows in safemode goto the unistall the program and uninstall the nero and goto start menu, then run type "mcsonfig" goto startup tab and unselect the all the programs in the start up and reboot the system .try it and inform to the fixya.com
the power is supposed to stay on when that little plastic button is pressed(screen switch)the screen switch activates hibernate and power saving;if you press the power button a screen will open informing you what programs are currently working.by shutting down you have caused an illegal command.
hopefully if you restart in safemode then shut down correctly and restart every thing should be ok.
