Smell gas when I turn on the heat

Whenever I turn on the heat and it's really cold outside I get gas fumes through the vents. It's so strong we have to roll the windows down, get warm and turn them back off. Then the smell is outside of the car once I park it and lingers for a while. It's in my clothes and everything.

When it's very cold outside, people tend to close all doors & windows (to keep the cold out & the heat in).

The problem is that no fresh air can come in to replace the oxygen that is being burnt up. The lesser the oxygen, the stronger the smell of gas (that can't be burnt without oxygen, but is still forced out of the pressurised cylinder).

The solution may well be to slightly open two windows (or a door) on opposite sides of the room with the gas heater, in order to provide cross-ventilation of fresh air.

Without the introduction of fresh air, the room will become filled with gas instead (hence the strong smell), and you could become unconscious (with no air left to breathe) and suffocate.

You need to act fast as your current setup is very dangerous.

SOURCE: Smell of gas fumes underneath vehicle near fuel tank

I have a VOLVO XC90 2004 and it started to have that bad fuel smell in the garage. My wife brought it to the dealer and while I was researching, I found that it has a recall pending from th NHTSA website. I told the dealer about this they said it does not have a recall. Called Volvo North America and they said they have not released the recall but they will in February 2010. Too make it short, the rep called the dealer and explained to them to replace it for free for there will be a recall on it. The hassle to deal with the service advisor is worth it cause I did my due diligence and got the fix for free. :>

I have a 1997 Lincoln Town Car, I have a strong gas smell while I am driving.

I would say park in a place you can see a leak.
When engine is cold turn key on the fuel pump should put pressure on fuel line to engine. If you don't smell or see gas any where. crank engine see if you can smell or see gas under the hood or car. If there is still no sign outside it must be bringing it in from your vents. the vents let outside air in. so the gas leak should be around or in front of the vent intake air. Sorry I can not be of more help.

Strong gas fumes outside of car

Possibly the vent line that routs fuel vapors from the gas tank to the charcoal canister has come loose. Check the hoses and lines around the fuel tank for leaks. There will be a fuel feed line to engine, a fuel return line from engine, and the evap. line or hose that carries the fuel vapors.

Why would I get a gas fumes smell when car is sitting idle or just been shut off. Cannot find any leaks in gas tank or lines

gas is a very high evaporative liquid..fumes extremely strong..if overfull it will smell..and if emissions equipment has issues it will smell also.. when the engine gets hot, any gas present will vent off until the engine cools..thats the fuels evaporative nature..still keep an eye out for issues..

Gas smell coming from the driver vent.

Hi Doritelberg, If the fuel consumption of your vehicle has increased or there is any sign of a misfire, I believe that one of the injectors may be leaking. For fuel leakages on fuel injected vehicles, it is better to check while the engine is running as the fuel line is pressurized in that state. It would be helpful to know if the smell started after a fuel filter was replaced and what other symptoms, if any you are experiencing with your vehicle? Regards John

Smell of gas and whistling sound

Its all connected.
The computer uses a solenoid to vent the fumes from the tank when the engine is running.
The vapor canister holds the fumes until the vent valve is opened.
The computer tried to vent the tank and something went wrong.
It could be from the excessive heat or something with the venting system.
A mechanic would test the venting system.

Strong gas fumes coming from 2001 windstar

The "cause" would be a fuel system or EVAP system leak. If the fumes are that strong, then I would take the vehicle back to Ford again and make the sevice manager stick his nose in it and then tell you there is no problem....

Help with gas fumes smell

Was fuel smell present before you had fuel pump replaced? If yes I would sugest you drop tank and see if fuel vent hose is plugged forcing fuel back pressure line to vent through cap. If fuel smell was not present before you replaced fuel pump and seal. I would suggest you drop tank back out and check all fittings and hose conections. also if you still have old sending unit you could check to make sure they are exactly the same. As Sometimes you have to pull relief valve from old sending unit and install it in the new one, as some sending units wont have one in it. and some will have one that is regulated at a different fuel pressure. hope this helps Vic

Fumes escaping from ac vents inside vehicle while driving and leaves a film residue on inside of windshield whenever the heat or defrost are used.

Hello dedunwoodie.
Your heater core is beginning to leak coolant.
As the fan blows through it it is picking up the liquid and depositing it on your windshield.
It will need to be replaced to solve your problem.
