1. click START-settings-Controll Panel- Network Connections
2. right click on your LOCAL AREA CONNECTION and select PROPERTIES from the menu.
3.when properties opens, select TCP/IP by highliting it, then click on the properties .
4.once the new window opens titled "internet protocol (tcp/ip) Properties you will need to check the boxs that say "Obtain an IP adress automatically" and "Obtain DNS server automatically"

The connection to your modem could be faulty.
Ring your ISP and get them to test the connection to your ADSL modem.
Also do you have ADSL line filters on all your phones?
The phone connection to the ADSL modem does NOT use a ADSL filter.
Shut down your computer, unplug the cable modem and the switch. Connect all three - computer to switch, switch to modem. Make sure that the ethernet cable between the router and the modem is in the router uplink port and that the computer is plugged into one of the four ports that look alike. Wait 30 seconds - plug in the modem. Wait another 30 seconds, plug in the router, wait another 30 seconds and boot the computer.
Open a browser and see if you have internet access. If you still don't, then try to check the browser by typing 192.168.1.1 into the address bar of the browser. That should give you the browser sign in screen. The Linksys default is to leave the user name blank and type admin for the password. That should give you access to the router so you can check the settings.
If this doesn't work, document carefully what happens and post again with your results and we'll try to go from there.
The modem jack is too small because it is for a phone line connection not an ethernet connection. If you want to get online by dial-up, you need to connect modem to a phone line. Ohterwise look for another input jack on the laptop that the ethernet cable will insert to.

you can use 4 pair (8lines)telephone wire to semulate ethernet cable (unshield). you will pickup noise on the line.
only one unit can be the moderm to access the Internet the other has to be a router. (Lan port only). and you cansetup both to have wireless access.
you probably need to access the web management function for this modem. Using a PC connected to the modem, open a web browser and type into the address bar the address of the router/modem/gateway. This is usually 192.168.0.1 or 10.0.0.1 or 10.1.1.1. If you cannot find this information, find the status of your ethernet connection on your computer (where it tells you you computer's IP and time connected etc). Here you will find a number labeled "Gateway" this is the number you want to type into your web browser.
Once you get this correct you will be prompted for a username and password (by default it will be admin, admin) then you should have access to the configuration of the modem.
Write back if you're unsure of any steps
Make sure that all the wireless cards are set in the properties to obtain an ip address automatically, dissable the wired lan adpter connections as this can confuse the router.
Restart all the pc's and then right click on the wireless pc icon in your task bar and then click view wireless networks and make sure that you are connected to your network and that the internet is available, known as local & internet in Vista.
open up internet explorer, go to tools, internet options and delete browsing history cookies and temp files and then refresh the page as the proxy server will need to refresh.
