It sounds like just the one problem. Your tails and the dash illumination lights are all on the one circuit that the fuse keeps blowing. Don't get confused thinking of another main fuse, just focus on this one circuit..
It is very seldom that a short develops at the fuse box, it certainly can happen from corrosion or loose terminals, but it is rare. More likely is a bad wire just like the one you found near the exhaust. Somewhere very likely a wire has had insulation stripped or scraped off, soon as the wire touches metal it will blow the fuse. Were any other wires damaged in that harness for the speed sensor? Or do you see any wires hanging down from under the truck, anywhere going back to the tail lights?
If you did the stereo yourself, were any wires cut going to the dash? I doubt this as the wire for the dash lights would be in a wiring harness that is like a bundle from under the dash up to the instrument cluster. You just have to keep looking for the short.
The wire color for the tails and the dash is a pink wire. this circuit also includes all your dash illumination, so your short could be up under the dash. I had a short in my buick under the dash, never found it, but I ran a new wire from the fuse up to the instrument cluster, so at least I had cluster lights that work.

SOURCE: Dashboard and tail lights out on 97" Nissan Sentra
I took my pathfinder to U-HAUL and asked them to check the towing lights. There was a pinched wire by my tail light and they cut it and changed it out for me, it was $5. I am so glad that I didnt take it to Nissan. My second step was going to be getting a new dimmer switch..but the guy who worked on my car said that wouldnt be the problem. He also told me that replacing a fuse that kept blowing out was dangerous and after the first time to get it checked out. Learn something new every day!!
SOURCE: 1995 Nissan Pickup, Blown turn signal fuse
you might need a Turn Signal Column Switch, I have a 1993 Nissan Pickup and my fuse blew all the time. I dexed that problem i have some wires in the back of the truck that was rubbing on the frame. Now my running lights are not working and when i turn on my head light one will come on so i will have to turn on and off about 10 times then both of them will come on, so my turn signal switch is bad.

How long did the 2nd alt. last before it died? The voltage regulator is, I believe, attached to the alternator. Have u had the voltage regulator checked?
SOURCE: dash and tail lights not working in car with no blown fuses
start by the battery twist wire on pos termanal this happen to me on my dodge van bad batt took out speed o meter and tach. replaced batt no speedo no tack.i had to go on a a long trip back home half going up a hill the tach jumped to life then about one hour latter had to make a stop pulling off the freeway slowing down for the stop sign the speedo came on and both have worked ever since. I have talked to a dealer ship there no reset codes for that problem
SOURCE: Dashboard lights not working
No insult intended, but are you sure the lights on dash aren't just dimmed out? I fell for that one when it went through the car wash. Wiping down everything one of them rolled the dash dimmer. Good luck. And that inj looks like an abreviation for injector. That needs to be looked into cause something or an injector is shorted. good luck
