Dvds hi just bought a second hand dell c600 running windows 2000nt prof . my problem is it has a dvd/r but wont play dvds . i get a box saying the laptop does not have a dvd code reader so canot play . what can i do to play dvds many thanks....

This is a CD-ROM drive. CD drives will not read DVDs. You need a DVD-RW if you're going to be burning DVDs or if you're only going to be watching DVDs then a DVD-ROM drive would work.

Toshiba Satellite C650D has a DVD Drive and it is capable of playing DVDs.Certainly, it will play DVD. It even supports High Defination (HD) video. So, ENJOY!

Two things to check: First, look on the tray edge - does it say DVD and CD, or just CD? If it does not say DVD,it will not play them. The second thing is you may not have software to play a DVD. Usually Windows will use media player, assuming you have a dvd player. You can also open "my computer" and the drive will show up as a DVD or just CD.

why the DVD wont play might be for different reasons... 2 broad category software / hardware 0.I ll assume its a drive that can play cds and dvds 1.software- u must have a problem with the drivers. Drivers tell computer's brain how to connect to each of its organs(parts like monitor keyboard DVD drive etc) if this is missing its like ur brain doesnt know how to move ur right hand...u ll need to reinstall the drivers then... u ll get the drivers from the website for the laptop Hardware 2. next try using a lens cleaner for ur drive it usually is an air can and a disc... try that ... 3. If still the problem hasnt been solved... the trouble maybe with the drive physically which means u d have to replace the DVDdrive...

Try cleaning off the laser of the dvd drive with a damp q-tip. This will make sure there is no specs of dust or dirt on the laser.

If it sill plays cd's but not dvd's then that means the laser is bad cause it takes more power from the laser to read dvds cause there is more information that needs to be verfied.

So if the laser is bad that means the drive you bought was defective. Try a bunch of different dvds to be sure you don't have any that are bad.

If your getting it with any dvd your putting in there then you know you need to get another drive.

Try using a disc cleaner ..

You can install another DVD player software.
there are plenty of free players on the internet that you can download, or you can buy one at your local software dealer. Once you install this, the newer video codecs should be installed

load windows xp all drivers work on it....

The windows XP drivers should work on windows 2000 due to it being the same OS but different GUI.

For the DVD player, You can try XPcodecpack.com which contains alot of the codecs for decoding audio and video.

simply clean up the lens slightly with clean pointed cpouon bond qs in triangular shape to wipe away the possible tar dusty substances,if still doesn't work and your DVD is 3-years old above of using...sorry taht is the natural destiny of lens failure!!!!Change with good tested lens one!!!
