Question about Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate Edition

1 Answer

404 problem I can't seem to find some of the web sites that I belong to with the vista program. Every time I goggle the name it brings up the website choices but when I enter I get the 404 page not found screen. Big Fish games is one of these. My son plays on this site and has a membership. We never had a problem with his other lap top which had XP, but we can't seem to get onto this website with vista.

As the name mentions, error code 404 means that the
1. address that you are trying to access does not exist. First u need to make sure that you are typing the correct URL in the address bar of the Internet Explorer (or any other browser). If you are sure that the url you have typed is correct, then you can check it from any other location (a cybercafe, friend's pc etc.).
2. It may also happen that the site you are trying to access may currently be on maintenance so , the web page will usually not be accessible.
3. If you are accessing the URL from bookmarks, it may not load properly as pages that require user login will expire after some time.
4.You could also try an alternate web browser (Internet explorer 9,mozilla firefox, opera, chrome etc).
Now, try to open the big fish games website from here.

(As Internet Explorer 7 has known issues regarding opening some websites, i suggest you to switch to a different browser)

all the best.

How do i fix this

Known as "Not Found" errors, 404 errors occur when a link attempts to resolve to a webpage that does not exist.

When links are "broken" in this manner, search engine rankings can become affected and visitors grow reticent to return.

Luckily, the broken links that cause 404 errors are easy to find and fix using Google's online webmaster resources, allowing you to ensure that all pages display correctly and without error.

Log into Google Webmaster Tools by entering your Google ID and password.

Add your website to your Google Webmaster Dashboard.

Type your domain name (everything in your URL before the first forward slash)

into the Dashboard text box.

Click the "Add Site" button.

Select a verification process.

Click the "Verify your site" link.

Select your desired verification route from the drop-down box labeled "Choose verification method."

Select "Add a meta tag" and paste the provided code in between the <HEAD></HEAD> tags of your homepage, or choose the "Upload an HTML file" option to upload a blank html file with the name specified by Google.

Verify ownership of your web domain.

Upload your amended home page or Google-named blank HTML file to your server, depending on the verification method you chose in Step 2.

Use an FTP program to transfer the file in question to your website.

Click the "Verify" button to complete the process.

Identify 404 errors.

Click the "Dashboard" link to view website errors.

Examine the "Detail" column and locate any web addresses that show "404 (Not Found)" results.

Click on the "Linked From" column for each identified 404 error to see the location of the page that contains the broken link.

Visit the page that contains the broken link.

Right-click on the broken link and select "Copy Shortcut" or "Copy Link Location."

Right-click in your browser's address bar and select "Paste" from the ensuing menu.

Examine the link in your address bar.

Look for stray quotation marks, spaces, periods or commas.

Remove everything before the first slash from the link and see if the domain still displays.

Fix broken links. Open a text editor and load the HTML file for the page in question.

Correct link typos and delete links that no longer lead to live websites.

Save your amended HTML files and re-upload them to your server using your FTP program.

Return to the Google Webmaster Tools Dashboard.

Click the "Sitemaps" link on the left navigation bar.

Click the "Resubmit" button to resubmit your website's sitemap.

Wait an average of four to six weeks for Google to re-index your amended website pages.

Hope this helps

404 not found

The 404 or Not Found error message is a HTTP standard response code indicating that the client was able to communicate with the server, but the server could not find what was requested.

The web site hosting server will typically generate "404 - Not Found" web page, when users attempts to follow a broken or dead link, hence the 404 error is one of the most recognizable errors users can find on the web.

A 404 error should not be confused with "server not found" or similar errors, in which a connection to the destination server could not be made at all. A 404 error indicates that the requested resource may be available again in the future; however, the fact does not guarantee the same content.

Cannot make connection what is error 404?

Error 404 is when the web page you are trying to access isn't there. If you are the owner of the site, try double checking spelling and capitalization. On some (Mostly Linux servers) Capitalization is a must. For example. www.123.com/index.html is not the same as www.123.com/Index.html.
If this is a site you are trying to visit, either the webmaster has it down for maintenance, or the site is not operational.
Hop this helps.

    When i acess gmail,http 404 not found

    Hi,
    you are getting error: 404
    Cause
The 404 Not Found error is an HTTP status code that means that the page you were trying to reach could not be found on the web site's server.
    Resolution
    1) Retry the web page by clicking the refresh/reload button or trying the URL from the address bar again. The 404 Not Found error has been known to appear on occasion even if there is no real issue so a simple refresh will often load the page you were looking for.

    2) Check for errors in the URL. Often times the 404 Not Found error appears because the URL was typed wrong or the link that was clicked on points to the wrong URL.

    3) Move up one directory level at a time in the URL until you find something. For example, if www.w.com/a/b/c.htm gave you the 404 Not Found error, move up to www.w.com/a/b/. If you get nothing here, move up to www.w.com/a/. This should lead you toward what you're looking for or at least confirm that it's no longer available.

    4) If you move all the way up to the website's main page, try to run a search for the information you're looking for. If a search function isn't available, try finding your information by using links from this page to dig deeper into the site.

    5) Test the page at downforeveryoneorjustme.com. Just enter the webpage in this online tool and it will tell you just that - if the site is down for everyone, or if the problem is on your end somewhere.

Finally, if all else fails, you may want to attempt to contact the webmaster for information on where you might locate the page you're looking for. The webmaster of most Internet sites can be reached via email at webmaster@website.com, replacing website.com with the actual website name.
