Have a century 80gl wire welder that even on max speed isn't feeding fast enough to consistently weld. this is the second one like this but its moving faster than the last but i can't make a weld because it's too slow. What can i do to speed it up?
Check the speed control board's voltage from the fan. If you are below 20 volts, 1- oil the cooling fan bushings to see if that helps. Otherwise adding in a discrete 24 volt 1 ro 1.5 Amp "control" transformer and a 2 ohm 50 Watt resistor in place of the fan's 24 volt tap (it rarely gets to 24 volts) should bring your speed up.
This does assume the board is fully functional.
Thanks for the solution. I'll let you know how it does onc I check it out
The other solution if the nominal voltage off the fan windings to control board are 24 volts is to change the feed control. The Miller part should be originally a 2500 ohm linear taper potentiometer, if you go to a 1000 Ohm potentiometer, the speed increases and the adjustable range narrows slightly.
If you need to slow it down, such as after installing a 24 volt nominal control transformer from a furnace, using a 5000 Ohm Linear taper potentiometer will slow the feed rate down.
Mark the order of the leads, and they will slip off the old control, they will slip onto the factory lugs with a wire loop with no problem- and put the on the replacement potentiometer in the same order and location as the original control.
One advantage to the 24 volt control transformer- it allows you to replace the fan in the future with an inexpensive exhaust fan motor from a home center rather than the expensive Miller version.
