Question about Brother MFC-440CN InkJet Printer
Error 52 is showing up on my MFC440CN and I can not find any information about what it means or how to fix it
SOURCE: Error 46 Unable to Init.
No need for part necessarily
SkipperOz solution pasted below
MFC-5440CN saved from the tip!
"Unable to Clean" message - found TrickyDicky's sltn 4 for various printers.
Went into maint mode as per sltn 4 - verified error 46.
"The user can establish the internal Machine Error Code as follows: pull the mains cable out of the machine (power off), hold down the Menu/Set key, re-insert the mains cable into the machine (power on). The internal Machine Error Code will be displayed."
Keyed in 80 - stepped through the items with "down" key and located Purge Counter.
"Press the 2, 7, 8, and 3 keys in this order to reset the purge count to zero
Press the Stop/Exit key to return to the initial stage of the maintenance mode.
Press the 9 key twice to return to the standby state."
This worked brilliantly - no need to tamper with any parts of the printer. Purge Counter reset did it all. Fully functional printer.
Thanks TrickyDicky for info on verifying the error code and purge reset

Unplug the printer from power cord.Press and hold the "menu" button, then plug the device. You'll see on the LCD screen a "machine error" code.If this code is 40,41 or 4F the print head is defective. If the error is 50 or 51 there is error in Purge unit and printer require service. If the error is 46 the waste ink tank is full.Follow this:
Enter 80, then scroll down with the arrow down (round) key. You'll find an entry listed as purge count. If number
is over 6000, enter 2 7 8 3.This will reset the purge count value. Then restart the printer, hopefully without the
annoying cannot clean message.

I argued on the phone with a BROTHER REP. that he should give the codes and directions to reset the machine, he refused time and time again, saying that this means physical damage to the machine an re-setting it is impossible to help, but i insisted, and it did fix the problem and the error went away.
here is what you should do, unplug for 10 sec. press and hold on the menu key while you plug it back in untill you see the screen "parameter init" press 99 and wait, this is what i did and it fixed the problem !!

SOURCE: Hi our printer a
This is the Brother definition of error code 4F:
"The head drive voltage has dropped from the high to low level in an abnormally short period." or "The head drive voltage has not risen to the specified level within the specified period in the self-diagnosis"
"Piezoelectric ceramic actuator defective (Cracks or rare short)"
"Main PCB defective"
No simple fix I'm afraid. You could contact a Brother repair agent but I expect they will want to charge you more than a new machine. Getting hold of parts for a Brother machine as a private individual (i.e. you're not a trade professional) is almost impossible, and even if you can, parts are ridiculously expensive - again, 9 times out of 10 it costs more to repair than buy a new printer. I imagine this is to preserve Brother's service agents' business, and Brother's new machine sales. Sorry.
