Its sounds like a video cord problem, if you are hooked up by the yellow red and white cords to your TV, adjust them until the picture returns, its a VERY common problem on EVERY TV and console since the SNES. Could also be the plug on the back of the PS3 if you just play with the cords your problem should resolve.
Open up your ps3 on the right site with a small flat screw driver. Turn out the blue screw with a small cross screw driver, slide the hard drive to the left and pull it to warts of you, note it is a 2'5 inch sata notebook harddrive. Hook it up to a pc or mac to run a diagnostic check on it to see if it is crashed, by the way you're able to tell by the sound it makes if it crashed.
When u hold the PS3 power button this will reset the resolution setting if u changed, but if nothing happened like i posted earler all u have 2 do is 2 replace it by the warrenty as sony was helpfull they gave me another PS3, its because of manufacturing defeact , so just replace it u cant replace it .
hold down the power button untill it beeps twice. about 3 seconds which should restart the settings to the default composite settings. from there you can change the settings back to hdmi or whatever you had them at before.
