Question about Craftsman 17.5 hp 42 in. Deck Lawn Tractor - CA Model

Craftsman Lawn Tractor - Electrical

I have an older Craftsman Lawn Tractor - mowing lawn today and all runs fine. Turn off and go inside for a Bio Break - come back out and it is dead - no sound when starter key is turned. I think the starter key may not have been all they way in the OFF position. Wonder if something fried in the starter circuit. Battery has good juice still.

Specifics - Craftsman 12 H.P. mower model number 502254982 although it has a repalcement motor installed.

I have electrical diagram - variances are that seat safety switch has long been bypassed, headlights no longer installed.

I don;t know what voltages to look for where and at which switch setting to determine where the circuit might be breaking down.

Thanks for the input mowermanbp. There are a few "safeties" built into this starter circuit - the mower deck, the clutch pedal, and the seat switch. Physically the clutch pedal was pressed and the mower deck disengaged. The seat switch was disconnected a long time ago. Somewhere the circuit is not working - I'm trying to figure out from a diagnostic viewpoint how to go about running through and checking things.

If anyone has a step-by-step suggested process and an idea of what meter readings I should see with the key at various settings that would be helpful - I'm not certain how to tackle this.

I would like to suggest checking the main fuse and starter solenoid to start with, there should be 2 smaller wires going to the solenoid one is to do with one of the safty switches the other is from keyed switch, one of thse can easly have fallen off during operation.

Make sure you mower deck is not still engaged. that might make it not start with that safety switch.

White smoke coming out of mower

It sounds as though you are losing power (electrical power); see if charging the battery fully allows it to run longer or if charging the battery helps.

Difficult to start -- bad kill switch?

You have 3 safety switches located on the tractor, any one of which can cause the tractor to not crank over.
I assume the deck lever is not engaged, you are sitting in the seat and you push the clutch down when trying to start?
Start by lifting the seat and disconnecting the seat switch, push the clutch in and try to start.
Start there and we'll go from there.

Craftsman lawn tractor, runs fine, but there's a fine black soot all over it after mowing on a hot day. it is running fine. Any ideas? The oil level was fine, the mower belt looks normal

What you may have ,is a mold in your lawn,
To tell the difference between mold & soot (carbon) wipe some off w/your fingers, rub together, if its greasy, its carbon/soot, if it does not leave a stain on tour fingers, its mold.
( mold comes from lack of nutrition in your lawn)

I have a craftsman electric key start lawn mower. I used the key start twice and have charged it after each mowing, but now the key start won't turn it over.

the battery probably got over charge & shorted the cells the tractor should charge the battery as it runs if it was equiped with electric start the battery charger more than likely over charged it killing the battery
