    1. After powering up the router, use an ethernet cable to connect your
computer to one of the ports on it marked 1 through 4. Next open a web
browser window on the connected computer and type http://192.168.1.1
into the address bar and press enter. This will take you to the Netgear
Smart Wizard welcome page, click OK to begin the configuration.
The router will attempt to detect the type of connection you have and
the next message you receive should be Dynamic IP (DHCP) Detected,
click Next once you see this.

    2. Next you will enable the wireless capability of your router. In the
dropdown box for the region where you are located select
      United States
from the list. On this screen you should also change
the Wireless Network Name (SSID) from its default value to
something unique so that your Base Station will not be confused with
      another. Click Next.

    3. You should now see a message confirming that your connection is
working and wireless is enabled. However, your are not secured yet. Read
the notes and click Done. Then direct your browser to http://www.routerlogin.net
to continue the configuration. A window will pop up prompting you for
your login and password, enter admin for the username and
      password
for the password, then click OK.
Once you have logged in you will see the main configuration page. If you are having issues with the automatic DNS assignment from the configuration window, try to add the following manually:
    Primary: 208.67.222.222
    Secondary: 208.67.220.220

    Hope that helps!

FOLLOW THIS FEW; Troubleshooting Steps

  1. Connect your computer directly to the modem, without the router. If you cannot access the Internet, contact your ISP.
  2. Reconnect the router, modem, and computer as they were before Step 1. Can you log on to the router? If not then:
    1. Check that all cables attached to the router and computer are secure.
    2. Check the Internet LED is lit. If it is not, troubleshoot light status, as explained in the router manual.
    3. Check the LEDs for the ports with cables are lit. If not, move the cable to a different port. If there are still no lights, then troubleshoot light status, as explained in the router manual.
    4. Check if the LED on the Ethernet adapter is lit. If it is not, then troubleshoot the adapter, do not continue this document. If the adapter is not NETGEAR's, contact Premium Support, or the manufacturer.
    5. Power off the router.
    6. Power the router on again.
    7. If you still cannot log on to the router, then do a hard reset on the router, as described in Forgot or Lost Router Password.
    8. If you still cannot log on to the router, Contact NETGEAR.
  3. Run the router's SmartWizard. This lets the router discover whether you have a static or dynamic IP address, and whether you are using PPPoE to connect to your ISP. (For routers without this utility, go to Step 7.)
  4. If a dynamic IP address is discovered, go to Step 8.
  5. If PPPoE is discovered, configure your router with the username and password from your ISP. Click Apply to enter the data. Go to Step 8.
  6. If a static IP address is discovered, configure your router with this information given by your ISP: the IP address for your router, the address of the ISP's DNS, and the address of the gateway. Click Apply to enter the data. Go to Step 8.
  7. If the Smart Wizard does not find an IP address:
    1. Power off the router.
    2. Power off the modem.
    3. Power on the modem.
    4. Power on the router.
    5. Go back to Step 3.
  8. Click Test to access NETGEAR's online test page. If the page displays, then you have Internet access!
  9. If the page does not display in a minute, see No Internet With New Router, Computer or Adapter: MAC Spoofing.
  10. Find out if the modem's IP address can be seen by looking at the Router's Status Page, as described in the manual. If not, then reboot the modem, router, and computer, in that order — waiting for each to completely reboot before rebooting the next.
  11. If the modem's IP is seen, then there is a problem with your browser's settings. Your security may be set too high for the Internet service you are trying to use, or your browser may be configured for a dial-up connection. In Internet Explorer you check this using Tools > Internet Options > Security > Default Level. If the slider is set to "High", change it to "Medium". Click Tools > Internet Options > Connections. If the radio buttons in the center are not greyed out, then settings for a dial-up connection are being used.

You'll just need to enter the security key on your laptop. Sometimes its a WEP key or WPA key. You should have wrote it down when you setup the router initially. If you don't know the security key, you can get on the router's Setup Page.Connect your laptop hardwired to the router first. Open Internet Explorer and type http://192.168.1.1 and enter. It will prompt you for username and password. admin is the username without password. Then you can get the wireless network key on the wireless tab. Its called WEP key or WPA key. Hope that helps. When you get the WEP key. G

If you forgot the router's wireless password, you can just reset the router. Press and hold the reset button at the back of the router for about 10 seconds then release, unplug the power to the router for about 20 seconds the plug it back in. On you laptop, look at the bottom right hand, right-click on the little computer icon that say wireless network.

    -Select Network and Sharing Center.
    -From there, Manage Wireless Network
-Remove all the listed network there (highlight each and click remove.) Just clear all.
-Then click on Add > Add a network in range of this computer
-Select the Netgear signal on the available list and click Connect.
    -It should say successfully connected.

    Hope that helps!

You need to know what network key is used on the router. If you do not know the wireless encryption key, you will need to connect to the router using a cable and to set up your own wireless key.

Can't get my lap top to connect wirelessly to my router. Model # WRT54G2. The laptop says it is reaquiring the network address, but nothing happens.

The Network and Sharing Center in Microsoft* Windows Vista* can be used to set up a secure wireless connection to the Internet.

Note: If an Internet connection is not automatically made by the operating system, you may need to contact your access point (AP), broadband wireless router manufacturer, or Internet Service Provider (ISP).

Set Up a Secure Wireless Connection to the Internet

These steps assume that your network adapter; AP or router; and cable, DSL or another type of modem have already been physically connected and configured. They allow you to create a new connection and configure it accordingly.

Follow these steps to set up a secure wireless connection to the Internet.

Note: If a wireless profile does not exist, you will need to create a secure wireless profile before you can set up a wireless connection to the Internet.

1. Access the Network and Sharing Center.

2. Select Set up a connection or network.

3. Click Connect to the Internet.

cs025389_selectanetwork_configurationnotmatching.jpg

4. Click Next.

5. Select Wireless. At this point, if the network(s) that are listed say that the network settings do not match the network requirements, as shown in Figure 1, create a secure wireless profile and then follow the steps again.

6. Select a network and click Connect. If you are not connected to the Internet, you may need to contact your AP/router manufacturer or ISP.

Access the Network and Sharing Center

To access the Network and Sharing Center, use one of the following methods:
  • Start » Control Panel » Network and Internet » Network and Sharing Center
  • Start » Network » Network and Sharing Center
  • Right-click the network system tray icon (the icon that displays two computer monitors) » Network and Sharing Center

Hi do you know how I can connect my lap top to the internet wireless with my linksys wireless router ? the lap top asks for an access code and I do not know what it is or how to find it do you know how to...

The access code or password is the encryption key in your wireless router, without this key the wireless router won't allow the laptop/computer to connect to this wireless router.
The WEP, WPA, WPA2 encryption key is in your router's wireless settings. Log into your router and got to the wireless settings, you will need to get the SSID and the encryption key. Then go to your computer/laptop's wireless card and configure it with the router's SSID and encryption key, so it will then connect to the wireless router and the Internet.

Connect your router to computer with ethernet cable then you can access it with following default link.

If you are not able to access it with above ip then check your computers ip address gateway ip is your router ip try with it.
Then it ask for user name and password.
Type user as "admin" and password as "admin" or "password" or blank.
Then you can see configuration page of router.
Then click on wireless and then wireless security then change wep password because it is in * or # format then save settings and restart router then you can connect with that code.

Installed belkin router for my lap top - doesnt work

Hi,

Thanks for using Fixya!

You have the right gizmo there. You just need to set it up correctly. If you are in the US contact belkin @ 1 800 223 5546.

You need to know your ISP type first before trying to contact them. Know if you have a PPPoE (High speed DSL with password) Dynamic IP internet (no user name or password required to connect to the internet, usually used by cable internet providers)

After you find the right information just contact belkin and they will assist you with the proper router usage.

Have a great day.

Cannot install D-Link router

You may try typing admin on the username field. Just leave the password field empty.

Once you're in the setup page, click on WIRELESS tab which on the left side of the page. On the Wireless page, you will see the wireless settings set in the router. You may also enable the wireless security on that page if there is not security enabled yet.

Please check this for your reference http://support.dlink.com/Emulators/di524/h_wireless.html

Hope this helps!

Can't connect home comp to laptop

how many wireless computers do you have?
is it a dekstop or laptop?
if desktop have you installed a wireless adapter? if laptop, is it using a built-in wireless adapter, have you enabled the wireless adapter or have you installed a wireless adapter?
-------

please make sure first that the wireless adapters are installed properly or enabled on your computers, if everythings OK.

-------

access the setup page of your router and change the wireless settings of it.

how to access the ui
- open the internet explorer
- on the address bar type in 192.168.1.1 hit enter
- enter admin under password, leave it empty for the username and click ok
- click the wireless tab
- set the wireless mode to mix, change the wireless network name or ssid with any preferred name you want to use, make sure to enabled the ssid broadcast and then click save settings.
- after that, under wireless tab, there are sub tabs, click wireless security
- set wireless security to WPA-PERSONAL, and under passphrase, enter your desired password for wireless connection, take note of it and please be reminded that its case sensitive.
- click save settings.
----------------------------
for your wireless computers, if adapters enabled and working fine, on the system tray you should have an icon for the wireless connection, doubles click on it and it will pop for the wireless connection window wherein you can see the name that you set on your router, all you have to do is select the name click on connect and it should ask you enter a password, enter the passphrase you set on the router and click connect. then check if you can go online, if yes do the same thing with other computers.

Have a great day ahead.

Wpa encryption for wireless router snb5600

Hi

That's not a lot of info to go on, but let's try: first, you've got to set the router up for the WPA encryption and put the passphrase in there. You have to do that set-up while you're connected by wire to the router otherwise you'd lose the wifi connection half way through the process. Once the router is set up, do the matching thing on your computer, switch on wifi, and disconnect the cable from your computer to the router. Get back if that's what you'd already done and let us know what stages worked and at what point it fails.
