Goto my computer, right click on your cd drive, and click properties. From there, click on recording, and make sure that Enable recording on this drive is checked. Also, What software/application are you using to burn the disc?

Do you have any other disc recorders you can use?
I suggest infrarecorder. It can burn to all sorts of cds(not bluray or hd-dvd yet, though)

    Its free, and opensource:

    http://infrarecorder.sourceforge.net/

Also, what are you trying to burn?

Hmmmm.....I have an idea, and it may or may not help, ad it may be bad. have you ever used turbotax for your taxes? some versions of it contain a program called cdzilla, and it cripples the cd and dvd drives and prevents them from working. Worse yet, its embedded in windows core coding. Download and run software such as Lavasoft's ad-aware and run a scan to see if you have it. Also, try burning just one type of file- like try to just burn photos on a cd-, and what type of disc are you using? is it compatible with your drive? if you are using dvd discs, for example, they won't work in your cd drive. (normally).

I am probably doing something wrong. I want to use a DVD RW to store data but it seems the MS Media center is all I have. Is there a way to use these types of removable storage like a CD-RW? Could I need...

You can use programs like Nero to burn data onto a disc such as a CD-RW. Since you already have a DVD burner you can even use a DVD-RW to burn your data

I have a Sony Vaio desktop with XP. My DVD-CD

Have you tried burning a CD in the new drive? Because the drive is a DVD it will always be recognised as a DVD, but should work perfectly well with CDs both playing and recording.

Acts like a Player/CD burner

I have an IDE Memorex DVD±RW Dual Layer Burner (52x32x16) that has burned well over 300 cd/dvd' sense 2004 when I bought it. In 2006 or 7, an update was given to it via memorex sight - I was told to keep a copy of the dn ld, for it can't be undone and became "IDE Memorex DVD±RW Dual Layer Burner (523216)AJ___NWK____\5&265FB54&0&000" MODEL - I got it on sale from Fry's Elec. - It seems that it was indeed a 1 way ticket - and it is time to retire the old work horse anyway - Quite happy with your products and getting me another. PS - I don't think the upgrade did any justus

VGC-RB30 DVD/CDR DRIVE

You actually perhaps using a non blank disc at that time. Burners don't really accept non writeable Discs. Check your CD first before burning. If you are using a rewriteable disc (CD-rw) that has files, it can burn and files will be overwritten but if you're just using a CD-r with files in it, the burner will eject and will tell you to insert a blank disc.

Cannot copy files to DVD disks

First of all you should have the recording tab ON. Have you tried burning using Nero instead of dragging and dropping? This may solve the problem.

However, if you prefer to drag and drop, try setting the write speed to a slower setting, even if the dvd burner has faster write capabilities.

1. I do not think it is a hardware issue.

2. You can try replacing the IDE cable, but if you can read the contents of the disk it does not suggest a communication issue between the drive and mobo.

3. I do not think that the burning software is to blame, when you drag and drop you are actually using a windows based burning software that is installed with the operating system.

4. set up your files to burn through nero, let the software do the work.

I had the same issue with my dvd burner, although slightly different error messages, solved it by using nero instead.
