You are probably responding to the HC1 review (Robin Liss) that measures resolution at what seem to be low values ("656.1 lines of horizontal resolution and 480.9 lines of vertical resolution"). That same review, however, states that the measured resolution score is three times the DV resolution score.
I printed out a standard ISO resolution chart, taped to a wall and shot 10 seconds of 1080i video with the HC1. I also shot 10 seconds with the HC1 set to record standard DV. When I played these back thru the component video connector on an HDTV, the difference in resolution was HUGE. 1080i is very much better than DV. No comparison. But the actual numbers on the scale for HDV were 5.5 - 6, reflecting a score similar to what Robin measured.
However, I think that somebody has to explain why the actual resolution measurements that Robin did are numerically so much lower than what one would expect from the technical specification. Why doesn't a "standard" resolution chart show 1080 lines of vertical resolution?
