Please help w/problems hooking HC1 to computer

I'm not getting this at all.

Trying to hook my camcorder to my computer in order
to transfer video and eventually burn a DVD.

I used the USB cable from camcorder USB out to computer
USB in. The computer is not recognizing the connection.

So what is left?

I see this iLink thingy, but I don't have iLink input on my computer.

I don't see any other cables that Sony has included that will help.

How do I get started?

Also, do I need to go into my camcorder menu and select
anything in order to transfer HD content to my computer and
have it downconvert to SD for burning?
