Take the ink cartridges out, shake it a little bit, get a paper towel and clean the heads of the ink cart (clean where the ink comes out), expect a little mess,

use a drop of alochol, and a q-tip, inside the printer where the ink cartridges insert, you will see where it makes contact, helps to clean that as well.

make sure everything isdry before you put back in printer, and a blast of air through the printer while you have the ink cartridges out helps to.

Once you have done all this.
Open the Printer Driver from the printers and faxes folder in the control panel, open the properties in there you will see an option to clean and align printer. do this until until it prints.

The best thing to do is clean the printer and buy new print cartridges.

Canon mx860 printer not using ink from PGBK 220

Inkjet printers need to be used frequently to prevent ink drying out and blocking the print head nozzles.
If the print head cleaning maintenance routine does not clear the blockages, then print head needs replacing, but it may be expensive.
It may be more cost effective to buy a later model and better printer than replace the print head.

Installed new ink and now won't print anything, not even a test page. says error. deskjet 4400 series

Each ink cartridge has a metal, thin Copper 'plate'.
In this 'plate' there is a series of VERY small holes. The holes are so small it's hard to discern their existence, with just the ***** eye.

The area on the printer's body, that the copper plate matches up to, also has matching holes.

After a given time the ink dries up in these tiny holes.
The dried ink needs to be removed.

Printer UNPLUGGED from power, printer case open.
I would suggest wearing dish washing gloves, and remove all ink cartridges.

Small bowl half full of distilled water as hot as you can stand it, dip a clean, lint-free cloth in it. (Distilled, because non-distilled water can leave hard water spots)

Squeeze all excess water out until the cloth is damp. (D-A-M-P) Wipe the area on the body of the printer.

I would suggest wiping in one direction only. Wipe, then go to a fresh, clean part of the cloth, wipe again.
Keep wiping until the cloth picks up No ink.

You may want to follow suit on the ink cartridge/s now, as they may have picked up dried ink.

Suggest use a can of compressed air for computers, and make SURE all areas are D-R-Y.

Allow the printer to set open to dry afterwards. May only take 30 minutes, or less.

Ensuring all surfaces are dry from the water, reinstall the ink cartridges.
Close the printer's case. Plug back into power, WAIT 1 minute, then turn on.

I've got a HP C4780 printer which I have had for around a year but only used about 5 or 6 times! Despite the ink cartridges having ink in them, the black cartridge is not printing at all. Not even a...

The ink solidifies right behind the micro printing nozzles. The only way to attempt to rectify this is to dip the print face into some warm (not hot) water for a minute or two, and dry after wards. If the cartridge recovers, Yippee, if it doesn't, replace.
Common problem. Be thankful it isn't a Canon or Epson, which entails replacing a seriously expensive 'print head'.

Hello

The ink "pipes" under the cartridges in the printer, not in the cartridge, are most likely dried up with ink.

Some times the issue could also be that the cartridges get dried up.

Or possibly the small contacts between the cartridges and the carrier don't touch properly or are dirty.

Something like magic bullet would clear up the dried up ink.

Black ink will not print

You can probably buy a whole new print head. They're expensive, but it might be worth it depending on the replacement cost of the printer. Another option is to get a cleaning fluid cartridge at carrot ink or some other ink website.
I've given up on cleaning, though. Now I use OEM ink and I make sure to print something at least once a week to keep the ink in the head from drying.
