Question about Pioneer Audio Players & Recorders

I have a Pioneer SA_410 Amplifier. Has open circuit mains transformer. Could you advise what its AC secondary output voltage & current are? Regards

I have replaced many thermal fuses in power transformers. Is the primary open?? If so, cut the copper shield on the primary side of the transformer with a pair of cutters and peel back the paper insulation to reveal the thermal fuse. Replace it and everythings OK!! If the secondary is bad there's no hope, of course. Anyway, in the meantime I will research your question and post again very soon. I have several old pioneer schematics and know where to find what I need.

Conventional power pack


A primary and secondary usually refers to a transformer. The primary side being the input side 110 AC Volt or 220 Volt AC side. Also called Source.
The Secondary being the "output to load" side 12 Volts "for example". And also called Tap (Secondary Tap)

The voltage is changed by conduction, magnetic flux, neither side touching one another. And the number of turns of wire, per side, determine the voltage. The voltage may either be a step-down or Step-up depending on its use.
An unconventional method is to have both the primary & secondary combined into a single tapped winding - which arrangement is called an autotransformer. The autotransformer does not provide isolation between primary and secondary circuits but its simplicity makes it economical and space-saving.
Imagine a single wire wrapped from the top to the bottom being the primary, and tapping in. in the middle and bottom for the secondary, so the output becomes 1/2. That would be a step-down transformer.

The actual measurement of a transformer is measured by its efficiency (Faraday Law) which is defined as a ratio of power. I hope that's sufficient, but if you want more I would buy for $2 bucks an Electricity Made Simple Book, because there are pages after pages to write about transformers, and to understand electricity in general it is helpful to understand the difference between alternating current and direct current and its magnetic field of induction and magnitude of emf.

I don't think they post schematic for the transformer
But generally, the primary coil receives 120Volt AC input from household electrical outlet
And the secondary coil produces 12Volt AC output for the low voltage lights.
The 'coil' is a coil of insulated wire wrapped around a metal core. Two coils set side by side create a transformer... when primary is energized, the secondary responds to the magnetic field caused by primary core... resulting in a current that flows on the secondary coil.
Output voltage on secondary coil is determined by the number of wraps and diameter of wire.

Some transformers offer a choice of secondary output... Kichler for example... you can select 12-13-14-15 Volt AC output
This is achieved by the way the secondary coil is wrapped.... for less voltage a wire is tapped at one point on the coil... for more voltage, a wire is tapped at another point on coil. This gives the user several wire choices to connect the lights.

The Pioneer SA-600 schematic shows both voltages and currents. For this amp, the total current for left & right output modules (no signal) is 60mA. No-load voltage is 58 volts, dropping to 48 volts (one channel driven, 25 watts out).

Pioneer model SA 9500 stereo amplifier problems.


Is the dc voltage reading on the base of the outputs 0.6 with emitters reading 0.014 or there about. Depending on the outputs used you might read 1.2volts on the base. Your collectors will read the power supply voltage of 50 or 60volts or more. If this is what you are reading on your meter the problem is in the speaker protection circuit. This circuit is what drives the relay you tested.

Power supply output for Yamaha p4500 secondary output for the power supply so that i could check the voltage


Hi Joel, although we've sourced detailed schematic for this P4500 amplifier, there are no many voltage details on it for manufactures sake. Anyway, mine findings are. Secondary winding on main transformer should supply no less than 2 x 75 volts which makes after rectifying and filtration no less than 2 x 90 volts on capacitors with amplifier without input signal. Also transformer has to be very "hard" , otherwise amp will start clipping before reaching stated wattage on output.

Often they will just double up with two amps, one inverted, and use in bridged mode.at the higher power in what we call an "H" arrangement.

Since the drains are tied together, the heatsinks MIGHT be hot output level.

I have the Behringer 10watt amp used but it wont power on at all...


Please open the amplifier and check from the power supply to the output section. You will need a multimeter to check for the ac input , then the fuses, the switch continutiy and the output secondary section ac. Now the DC to the circuits, the rectifiers, the filter capacitors, fusible resistors. Once the power is coming over to the main board and to the output drive, the premap section needs a check . The fault will be around this section if the outputs are clean. hope this helps.Good day

I would contact Sherwood as Transformers are deemed to be safety components and should be replaced with excat parts or those recommended by the maker.

What are the secondary voltages off the transformer supposed to be?


The secondary voltages of a transformer are stepped down voltages. For example a transformer might be stepping 120 volts AC down to 25 volts AC in the secondary. Which then would be rectified by a bridge rectifier in the power supply and converted to DC Voltage which would be used to bias transistors or tubes and other electronic components. The amount of voltage that is output for use is determined and calculated by the engineers designing the amplifier or pre-amp.

Amp power


Make shure with an ohm meter that the primary and secondary windings have very little resistance on the main trasformer,then check voltage in trasformer and out from transformer...BIGRED
