Dell inspiron is giving the messg "system has failed at checkpoint 0085" keyboard fail. New keyboard?

That would be the easiest (and cheapest) place to start. Normally an error like this means that they keyboard has a key stuck.

Tip

How to Repair or Replace a Key for a Keyboard.

Keys sometimes pop out or are accidentally bumped and fall off the keyboard. Here's a little trick to help you put the key back on:
1. Gather all the pieces or parts of the key - normally there are four parts: the key itself, a rubber nipple, and two base hinges.
2. Gently lift the key next to the one that popped out - just remove the key and do not remove the other parts. This is going to be the "reference" key.
3. Observe the assembly of the parts and make note of how they are connected at the base.
4. Replace the base hinges first - compare it to the other key base and make sure the rubber is in the center. The two hinge parts must be connected correctly like the "reference" key. Use a magnifying glass to see the proper assembly - do not alter the connection.
5. Replace the key - align it over where it's suppose to be and sharply snap it into place. You should hear a noticeable clicking sound if all the parts are assembled properly.
6. Test the key.
7. Replace the "reference" key back on.
8. Done!

When I boot up my pc Iget a black screen with the message keyboard failure. f8 will not work to get me to safe mode

You didn't specify if this was a USB keyboard or not. Power everything down and unplug the power cords.

Check that the keyboard is properly plugged in. If it IS a USB keyboard you can try a different USB port. Plug in and power up.

If that doesn't work try a different keyboard. You might need a new one.

Error when installing programs

First and easiest is to just reboot. If not, then click on Start->Run and type "regedit" without the quotes. Be very careful in here. You're going to be looking for the following key:
HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Installer\InProgress
So, click on the little plus sign to next to HKEY_Local_Machine, then on the plus sign next to Software.. and so on for all the keys there until you reach the InProgress key. If it's there, select it with your mouse and click the Delete button on your keyboard. Be sure not to make any other changes. Reboot, and see if the problem is fixed.
If you are not comfortable in the registry, uninstall office and reinstall it. I know that is nasty, but it will work.
Please leave rating. thank you
