When it goes dark disconnect the data cable of the monitor from the system end and if u still see nothing
monitor bad and if u see the colour scheme monitor working system is the culprit

Sounds like a hardware problem. If you got it for xmas then it's still under warranty.

Screen goes dim and barely readable

Check first that you have not the phone set in economy mode, eventual do a reset settings from phone settings menu.

If it does not depend on power settings, it means the backlight LCD lamp is either faulty or it has a bad contact, take it to a phone repair shop and ask how much do they charge for the repair, usually is not an expensive job.

You have it on the battery saving mode. Go to Settings > Phone Settings > Power Save > turn it OFF.

LCD goes dim within 1-2 minutes

You could have a bad "inverter" or flourescent backlight tube, or a problem in your power supply. The only way to isolate the problem is to check each component in sequence. If your hard disk and DVD / CD drive are still working when your screen goes dark, then I'd say it's the "inverter". You'll have to take it to a repair shop.
