The yellow maintains memory and display if it has a clock, So that might be what you are seeing.

Yellow wire from battery to radio no power?

Hi Excavator,

Normally both Red and Yellow on the radio need +12VDC (with Black Grounded).

One is supposed to be switched, the other constant (for clock, memory, etc). I've been hooking 'em both to constant power for so long I forgot which is which

I hook up a jvc kd-s16 and it will not keep the memory of the stations can you help

The yellow wire is the constant 12+V.
It has to be hooked up to a constant battery source.
If you did not install an aftermarket wiring harness consult to find the constant 12+V wire color code in your dash.
If you unhook your battery, you can splice into the cigarette lighter hot wire to keep the constant memory of stations and clock time.

I install a radio it dont keep a memory

Pull the radio back out. I bet you hooked up both power wires (red and orange or yellow) to the ignition on hot wire. Orange or yellow depending on the radio usualy goes to the ignition on hot wire and red to a constant hot wire. Check the radio wiring diagram or list. One of the power wires has to go to a full time power source. check the wires with a circuit tester with the key off till you find the constant hot wire (battery power)

Memory is not working on car radio

you need to hook a constant power to the deck usually the blue cord to the battery i just routed the constant from my amp and the remote also on the same speaker cord

Battey sparks when hooking positive up

You should always disconnect the neg. side of the battery when you disconnect. This is prevent a power surge to the ECM. The sparks you find is it's detecting something is on. It could be as small as the radio constant (memory).
