Question about Western Digital My Book Essential Edition (WDG1U5000N) 500 GB Hard Drive

Open Question

Not Allowing me to copy new files onto the drive.

I bought this drive about a month ago, and i only have about 120gb on it which are my backups from my computer. It is a 500gb drive, but now whenever i try and add new files to it, it says that it is too big for the drive. And by new files, i mean a game which is 6.03gb. so lets see..........380gb free, yet it wont let me put 6.03gb on it? do these things come with some kind of lock or something on them? does any1 have any advice?

I have just reformatted my hard drive to NTFS from FAT32(which came on the drive when i bought it) so I will keep updated If it allowed me to add more files once i put my backups back on the drive

It works now. reformatting seemed to fix it. I guess FAT32 was messing around with it. Now NTFS Works

SOURCE: cant download large files to my book

Fat32 cannot recognize large files. Format your HDD as NTFS. That should solve.

SOURCE: saying I can't copy 9gb file due to lack of free space, 433bg still showing free

that might be due to the drive being formatted as Fat32 which has a file size limitation of 4 up my computer, and look at the properties of that drive..right click..and that might help you

SOURCE: My Book 1Tb will not let me put movies on it

I know exactly what your problem is. You are trying to add a file bigger than 4 GB on a fat32 external hard drive. You simply cant put something that big in there without breaking it into smaller bits. You could easily add a bunch of small files just not huge files bigger than 4GB.
Your solution would be to reformat your WD external drive to a ntfs. That can be done as easy as right clicking your external drive through my computer and highlighting "reformat". Good luck and I hope you dont forget this little thing about computers..sometimes when you get a good deal on pc hardware its for a reason :)
this is good for all hard drives including western digital

SOURCE: Write Protection on Hard Drive

I think your machine could be affected with a virus. Most of the viruses do that to block you to access the hard disk or any external media. Try this good antivirus that i have come across the net its a demo version that works for 30 days but it will do you good.

SOURCE: cannot transfer files that are greater than 4GB

The lack of free space iis on your internal HD not the external. Whenever transferring files from one drive to another, you are acturally making a copy of the file to be transferred and sending the copy to the new drive. If your internal HD is nearly full, you can try to Cut and Paste the files to the external, or clear up more space on your internal b/4 tryiing to move the bigger files. Best of luck.

WD External Hard Drive Passport Ultra Beginner's Questions

Usually with an external hard drive it's not necessary for it to copy over an existing backup or at least you can program your PC not to do this. What will happen is you will have several different copies of backup's and you will have to decide if you want to erase the others and keep the most resent one. Yes your file will be saved withing the backup but if you change the file name it will file this as a new file

How do I get my Seagate drive to install all my computer work? It is a 1TB drive serial number NA75K753 .

u have not sufficiently defined what u want to do. I have no idea what "computer details" means.
My first suggestion would be to install Macrium Reflect Free. It can make a total IMAGE of ur computer. U can recover from anything with it. But u must do it on a schedule and keep no more than 2-3 images (they r big files). U can extract individual files or load the whole system onto a new drive.
My 2nd suggestion is to use windows explorer (file explorer in W8) to copy ur My Documents folder and picture & music folders to it. If the drive came with a backup program u may want to use that.

I need instructions on how to do a backup of my mac with the G Drive Mini

There are many ways to backup your hard drive. If you are on 10.5 or greater, you can use Time Machine. You do this by going into the System Preferences, choose Time Machine, select your G-DRIVE Mini as the backup disk, and turn on Time Machine. The computer will then backup your data on a regular basis. If you are using an older OS or do not want to use Time Machine, then you can backup by doing drag and drop or copy and paste the files from your Mac to your G-DRIVE Mini.

My hard disk sometimes works, some times it dosen't, mostly it dosen't how can I check if it still works?, I haven't abuse it or miss trated it

> mostly it does not work

Then, it is time to copy all the files from it, onto your computer, before it ALWAYS does NOT work.

Then, take the unit to any computer store; they can remove the 120GB disk-drive, and put in a new 240GB or 500GB disk-drive into the casing.

Help to backup full computer programs & docs with WD Passport 160

Try going to the "Computer" icon and look for the external drive. Open the ext. drive folder and look for the InstallSeagateManager icon, the Application one. Double-click on it and it will allow you to install the software to do a backup on your new computer. First thing you should see is the Language Selection screen. I think you can take it from there!

When i connected my Maxtor basics 160 for the first time 2 weeks ago i recall a prompt asking me to backup all files (or something similar)which i did. I recall another prompt saying this was successful....

You probably backed them up to the same hard drive that they were on. If you plug in your maxtor hard drive to another machine and it shows it as being empty... this would be my best guess.

Most drives come with backup software that automates the process(as best it can) so that you can one click backup your documents and files(not your operating system).

I prefer to copy and paste my files and do my own backups, but backup software is an easy solution for the do-it-yourself.

Acer 180 vista home basic D Drive has only 850 MBs remaining- cannot write dvds for back up not enough space

If you cannot delete unwanted files, fit another drive to your Acer. Get at least 120GB and copy or backup your files to it.
