Question about Western Digital My Book Essential Edition (WDG1U5000N) 500 GB Hard Drive
I bought this drive about a month ago, and i only have about 120gb on it which are my backups from my computer. It is a 500gb drive, but now whenever i try and add new files to it, it says that it is too big for the drive. And by new files, i mean a game which is 6.03gb. so lets see..........380gb free, yet it wont let me put 6.03gb on it? do these things come with some kind of lock or something on them? does any1 have any advice?

that might be due to the drive being formatted as Fat32 which has a file size limitation of 4 Gig..open up my computer, and look at the properties of that drive..right click..and that might help you

I know exactly what your problem is. You are trying to add a file bigger than 4 GB on a fat32 external hard drive. You simply cant put something that big in there without breaking it into smaller bits. You could easily add a bunch of small files just not huge files bigger than 4GB.
Your solution would be to reformat your WD external drive to a ntfs. That can be done as easy as right clicking your external drive through my computer and highlighting "reformat". Good luck and I hope you dont forget this little thing about computers..sometimes when you get a good deal on pc hardware its for a reason :)
this is good for all hard drives including western digital

SOURCE: Write Protection on Hard Drive
I think your machine could be affected with a virus. Most of the viruses do that to block you to access the hard disk or any external media. Try this good antivirus that i have come across the net its a demo version that works for 30 days but it will do you good.

The lack of free space iis on your internal HD not the external. Whenever transferring files from one drive to another, you are acturally making a copy of the file to be transferred and sending the copy to the new drive. If your internal HD is nearly full, you can try to Cut and Paste the files to the external, or clear up more space on your internal b/4 tryiing to move the bigger files. Best of luck.
