I added 2 new sticks of 256 memory and a 60 gig HD. Running XP and all is fine except for a sound issue I have posted here in this forum.

The system goes in and out of standbye very well, boots very well.

I keep it cleaned very well C-Cleaner, RegCure and I use Defraggler.

I did one Bios update but still am concerned that it is from 2002 and not newer.

Driver Detective and BiosAgentPlus say I have alot of missing updates but since I redid this HD from scratch (old 20 gig crashed) I am careful just exactly what I do update.

Caution: AC'97 audio codec for some reason as an update for the Crystal codec crashes this system, blue screen of death.

Windows 2000 runs best on the s353. I have tried running Windows XP on it, but ran into driver issues (Toshiba never released XP drivers) and there's not enough memory (I also have 256MB).
I doubt it's even possible to install Vista on that computer.

If you're running Windows XP, you could just work with it, you could upgrade the memory, or you could back up all your data, reformat, and install 2000. Note that I do not recommend Windows ME, and that I've had issues running Windows 98 on mine.

If your computer is running an old version of windows but it's an old installation and you've not maintained it, you might just need to run a CCleaner scan, defragment your hard drive, and disable any software that's running in the background and doesn't need to be (but don't disable your antivirus :P)

Are they white? This means they are dead pixels. Hate to be the bearer of bad news but it's not fixable.

Speakers and mic input not working anymore

Have you done a windows update recently? It could have been caused by a updated driver that your computer doesn't really like.

Or is your output device set to digital instead to analog?

Vertical lines on screen

Everything can be fixed.

Try hooking up your laptop to an external monitor. If you get lines then the problem is the video card.

If not, it's the lcd, usually it is anyways.

Just replace the lcd and your problem is gone.

Best of luck!

Try going into bios utility and check to see if there is a HDD enable option. If not, find another pc and burn a bootable bios disc with the original bios.

Toshiba Satellite 3000 hard drive

If you saved the old bios info on a floppy before you flashed your bios with the new bios info, you can reflash and restore your bios back to the original. However if you didn't save the info which is usually saved as a .bin file you still have a chance to re flash back to original settings. Use a friends computer with a floppy drive and download your original bios program from the toshiba web site or any other site which has bios flash programs/utility file to the floppy and reflash. If you laptop doesn't have a built in floppy you can use aexternal one that connects to the rs232 parallel printer connector. Thats if your laptop has one of these now becoming an obsolete port on most if not all laptops. As this port is being replaced by the USB port.

Screen is black

Prolly not the kids' fault. Computers this age frequently have problems with the backlight or inverter.
Assuming the screen was bright and crisp (not distorted) before it went out, and it's not an intermittent problem (the screen's stayed dead), it's more likely the backlight than the inverter.

You may be able to fix this yourself, but it's difficult. The instructions here:
http://www.irisvista.com/tech/laptops/Toshiba2435/sat2435_LCD.htm
Are very similar to taking apart a 3000-s353 screen (trust me, I've done it - actually, I'm typing this on an s353 that I had to replace the fl inverter in).
