    I got under the machine to locate the noise. I thought it was coming from the water pump. So I took it out cleaned and replaced and ran the machine again. Then relized the noise was coming from the gear case. Not sure what to do from hear. The machine is only three years old, four at the most. Is the gear case difficult to replace? Thanks for such a quick responce!!!

Hi Garvis, I see two possible issues with this machine. Either the pump bearing is out or a coin and or the gear case is failing.
Here is a good pic of the base;
Number 4 is your pump which is accesible by a panel on the back of your washer. I would pop this cover off and run the washer while examining with a flashlight watching out for the gear case in the center. Feel the pump for vibration matching the noise and check the movement of the tub to help locate the noise.

    The gear case requires two special tools to remove and replace. One is to release pressure on the brake spring at the bottom and the second is for the six springs positioning the tub and basket. I would get a warranty if possible and have it done, it will be cheaper this way. Some folks I have done these with have called Sears to get a one year warranty and the 250 or so you pay is around 70 to 80 percent of the cost.

How do I remove the agitator from LG top Load washer

the agitator is held by a bolt with a 7/16 drive nut located inside the middle of agitator from the top downward? however by ur description sounds like maybe u have bad bearing in the hub? the cam dogs in the agitator dont usually make any noise especially when bad they just dont allow the agitator to move or catch the groves to agitate. The grinding could also be coming from something stuck inside the tub or on its outside and thus is hitting the wall lining and makes a screeching scraping sound, Ive seen this several times, a bra wire, or loose coin or key, etc

Makes a noise when in the spin cycle. Almost like coins in the barrel only there are no coins in the barrel. Or sounds like it is trying to change gears and grinds.

Hello,

Welcome to FixYa.

Based on what you've described, sounds like a worn tub bearing unfortunately.

To check it, remove the agitator assembly inside the tub, once it's off. take the tub assembly and move it side to side to inspect for "play" in the bearing. This will explain the bad sounds and the grinding...I bet it doesn't spin the items out very well either due to too much vibration sensed to maximize spin.

Let me know what you find and I'll try to help you move forward from here. I can provide more detail with pictures if necessary.

Regards,

Macmarkus :)

When spinning it seems the washer is getting louder and louder during the spin cycle. It is a very steady noise no grinding to it. Maybe a bearing?

make sure heavy items are evenly distributed in the barrel. if to loud , stop the machin by openning the lid and make sure the weight is evenly distributed. never just throw laundry in , place it so wieght is evenly placed around.

Grinding Noise when Washer Attempts to Spin

It is probably the same problem because it is trying to drain during the spin cycle. My machine sounded as though a chain wis clanking, the solution was removing a coin caught in the drain pump. Access the pump from the bottom of the machine. 4 screws hold the mounting bracket on undo those, the electrical connection and two hose to the pump. Undo three screws holding impeller to motor and coin can fall out. Examine for damage if it is not too tore up, put back together. Keep in mind that when you unclamp the hoses that water will come out.
