Acer aspire 5335-2238. My son's friend recently asked me to take a look at his laptop because he couldn't get it to take a charge or run without the battery when plugged in. Right away I noticed the dc jack was charred and the plastic around it melted. He said the power cord "brick" got really hot, all the way to the tip where it plugs into the laptop. I know the bricks can get warm but he said it actually burned his sister. I ended up replacing the dc jack and 4 pin harness with a new one and figured this would solve the power issue. It won't get power with the original power cord and I also tried a few others that were similar. The only one that worked was an adaptor that I think went to a cordless phone or something like. The next problem was I had to fiddle with the dc jack to get the yellow battery light on. Still won't turn on without battery. The battery at this point is drained so I left it plugged in all day, at least 12 hours and the green light finally came on indicating a charged battery. The battery only charged about 8-9% and died fast. I tried more adaptors and got another one to light up the yellow battery light, again a small modem adaptor, not one with the brick. This time I left it over night and got about 12% charge. Both times the laptop turned on, booted up and ran until the battery died after about 5 min. I'm out of ideas aside from maybe a bios problem but I can't get it to stay on long enough to do anything about it. I don't understand why the new jack isn't working, it's a pretty simple install, no soldering. I looked real close at the board and didn't see any obvious fried chips or anything like that. Any suggestions would be great. I've had this 14 year old kid's laptop for almost 2 weeks trying to figure it out (I also replaced his keyboard, disc drive and cleaned it up) and he's calling me every day.

Since is shows it as charging then your power cable should be working. So it looks like a battery issue but batteries just don't die unless a cell inside dies then they will stop working. Try taking the battery off and making sure that the connections are clean then put it back in. If that doesn't work give the battery a good full charge then bring the battery and laptop back to where you bought it and get them to test the battery to see if a cell died.

you should be able to press ESC to exit hibernation, or remove the battery, remove the plug, press and hold the power button for 60 sec, and reinsert battery and power and turn on. when restarted, right click on desktop, click properties, and click the screen aver tab, click the power button, click advanced, and remove the check box beside enable hibernation on the "Hibernation" tab. it shouldn't do it again

First of all, what I'm about to tell you are general troubleshooting techniques - I make no claim that they will fix what you describe, but they may help lead you to a solution.
I hope you 'see the light'. Good Luck!

In the device manager you can disable this in all hw profiles. Sometimes in the BIOS, you can also disable it.
Hope this helps.
