Do you mean "unable to clean"?If it this follow this instruction. Unplug the printer from power cord.Press and hold the "menu" button, then plug the device. You'll see on the LCD screen a "machine error" code.If this code is 40,41 or 4F the print head is defective. If the error is 50 or 51 there is error in Purge unit and printer require service. If the error is 46 the waste ink tank is full.Follow this:Enter 80, then scroll down with the arrow down (round) key. You'll find an entry listed as purge count. If numberis over 6000, enter 2 7 8 3.This will reset the purge count value. Then restart the printer, hopefully without the annoying cannot clean message.
Machine error 46 ("Unable to Clean") indicates the wasteink "sponge" as full, which disables the machine's ability to clean. To fix this, you could get the needed part from a Brother parts dealer and enter the servicemode to reset the counters. However, the more reasonable thing to do would be to just change to another machine. You could also have the machine sent to service, but that most likely would not be worth the trouble.
The error is pretty common on old Brother inkjets, so it'll come back eventually even if you replace the part. Newer machines should not have this problem.
if your printer is a BROTHER which shows error 46 (unable to clean) it can be fixed: you need a new waistink absorber which can be purchased from a brother service partner near your home (see brother homepage). After replacing there must a eeprom rest be done.
