First: the C7180 will only work in ONE mode: wireless or wired. End of story there.
second: I spent almost 4 hours, yesterday, fixing this problem - "would not scan to computer because printer did not recognize computer for scanning yet would print & copy ok". I did solve the problem! Here is what I did: 1) removed all software related to C7180 ( make sure it is all gone ). 2) turned off all firewalls & security measures to ensure a clean, uninterrupted reinstall ( be sure internet connection is off for this to be safe ). 3) reloaded software ( hopefully you have the cd for this ). 4) followed all prompts for reload of software & then rebooted computer & tested copy mode, fax and finally scan. 5) went to HP site & made sure I had all updates & everything was ok with drivers. It was. I now have a clean install & all works as it should. The whole process ( after I figured out that it was a software problem ) took about 1 hour. Don't forget to reset your computer security! Be sure your firewall knows all HP software is good & firewall will let it thru.
This should do it.

The easiest solution is to just have a SanDisk USB drive... it takes 10 seconds to save to the drive, put it on your computer and it's done in another 20 seconds. so simple. it's not logical, but who cares. once it's on your computer, email it out or whatever your use. the end. yeah, HP screwed this up, but usually they are a good product. no problem.

Make sure you have installed the printer driver completly and sucessfully:

If then make sure if you are able to scan from your computer.
Open HP Solution center from desktop / Go to Start> All Programs> HP> HP Solution center.
And then try scanning from there.
If you are able to scan from there then try the steps bellow:
Open solution center> Settings> Scan settings> Scan to setup> Then in this window click on Restore defaults> Then apply or ok and close all the windows and try to scan from the
All-In-One printer.

If this still does not work then try the steps in the link bellow:

" no scan options refer to device documentation for trouble shooting"
you need to open up either solution center or hp director, go to settings, scan settings, then scan to set up and look for the option front panel destination a window should open to reveal scan short cuts and one titled front panel list. you need to select the shortcuts click add and once satisfied click on "update device".

Refer to device documentation to trouble shoot

you need to set up your scan to option.
this can be done from the hp software
open solution center click settings then scan settings
from there select scan to set up
a window will open and then click on front panel destination list
once again a window will open with a double pane on the left side is your short cut options click on them one at a time click add then once satisfied with options click update the device or ok
if it fails to update reset the printer and try those steps again, or re install just the drivers
if the same message appears then check the settings on your firewall

Scanner does not work

You first have to have the HP scanning program running on your computer. When you press scan, it's looking at your computer to see where it will send the image. If you just want to copy you have to use the copy function.
