    Huuum,

Tried your solution and discovered that the dryer does not produce any heat. I think the thermostat needs replacing ! Do you think the thermostat and the timer should be replaced?

    Thanks!

Hello Rich
Welcome to Fixya,

You said, when the drying cycle is at the end the dryer will not shut off!

This really sounds like the timer mechanism's is failing.

Try to unplug the dryer or if you can not reach the plug power off the breaker for 5 minutes.
If this resets the system then it was a glitch in the electronic system and you should be fine.

If it does not remedy the problem then it sounds like the timer mechanism's is not shutting down and needs replacing.
Let me know!

    Timer
    The timer is the source
for power to the motor and if the timer contacts are defective, there
will be no power getting to the motor. Since the wiring is different
between brands and models, you will need to refer to your wiring
diagram for terminal locations. Once you have located the correct
terminal for the motor operation, you will need to turn on the dryer
and check for 110v from the timer terminal for motor operation and the
chassis ground. If you have the voltage, the timer is most likely okay
and the problem is elsewhere. If there is no voltage, the timer is
    defective and must be replaced.

My roper dryer works fine, it heats and the timer advances, it just wont shut off at the the end of a timed dry or auto dry. What do you think?

A timed drying cycle uses the timer alone to stop the drying cycle. Once it times out like an egg timer a set of contacts open up shutting off the dryer. Or a set of contacts closes to activate a relay which in turn shuts off the power.
Auto dry usually uses a moisture sensor which would do the same thing as the timer. Once it doesnt sense moisture in the load for a predetermined time it in turn triggers a relay which shuts the power off. Some auto dry cycles just use the timer alone and guess-timate the drying time by the selection.
If yours does not use a moisture sensor then most likely it is your timer/cycle switch. There may or may not be a relay involved.
Most dryers have a basic wiring diagram on the inside somewhere on one of the panels which will help.
Since yours is acting up on both cycles Im guessing you have a bad relay or connection to that relay somewhere IF it uses a moisture sensor.

Electric Dryer Shuts Off

During the auto-drying cycle, the moisture sensor could be the problem.

If it also shuts off prematurely during the timed cycle, the operating thermostat could be turning the heaters off before the machine reaches operating temperature. Another possibility is that the operating thermostat does not turn off the heaters at all. When the machine heats up, it gets too hot and the high limit thermostat turns the dryer off.

Clothes still wet aftre drying cycle over

It sounds as if the wash cycle isn't terminated by pumping the rinse water out and spinning to rid the clothing of most of the water.
Most dryers sense moisture but I think they all will have a maximum run-time to prevent possible fires if the programmer fails to shut them down at the end of the drying cycle.
I would watch the machine and when it started the drying cycle, I would shut it off and check for surplus water that hadn't been pumped out as it should have been.

Driyer does not shut off runs continiously

Yes this is a timer problem. The timer is easy to replace but can cost around $100. You might try a used appliance store and see if they have a used one.

Does the dryer dry fine? If your dryer is taking too long too dry you might have a venting obstruction that is not allowing the dryer too sense that the clothes are dry so the timer won't advance. Try disconnecting the vent from the back of the dryer and dry a load unvented and see if the timer advances.
