My computer screen got unplugged

Chances are the video cable has come loose. You will need to locate where that has happened and figure out if you need to securely plug it back in, replace a cable, etc. You may find it handy to have a flashlight, if you can't fully get behind your computer, etc.

Normally, there are two cables from the monitor ("screen") to the computer. One is power, which you likely know what that looks like (a regular power plug, going to the wall) and the other will be for the video from the monitor to the computer.

Modern computers typically have color coded ends on the cables with color coding on where they plug on to the back of the computer, etc. This is especially true if you purchased the monitor as a set with the computer.

Typically power cables are black.

Follow each cable from the monitor to it's respective location. Follow power cable from monitor to wall or where you have it plugged in.

Video cables can be in five different styles typically (oldest to newest):
(VGA: blue, DVI: white, HDMI: black, Display Port: black, Mini-Display Port: black)

Follow the second cable, the video cable, from the monitor to where it should plug in on the back of the computer.

Make sure each is securely plugged in to where it needs to go and is hand tight snug, but not too tightly screwed on at each end.

My monitor has kicked into sleep mode and won't "wake up".

Unplug all the Cables from Compaq Presario 5103 CL and leave the Keyboard, mouse and monitor cable pluged in.

Now make sure the power cable of the monitor should be pluged in and the power cable of the tower should be pluged in.

Now to check if the montor is fine just unplug the video cable only which will show no input signal on the screen. If it shows this signal the monitor is fine. Plug back in the video cable.

If the monitor is going to sleep mode it might be possible that the old computer ( Compaq Presario 5103 CL ) is in stand by mode. hit any key on the keyboard and it should come back .

If it is not in the stand by mode then do one thing. Check the same monitor with the new computer. If it is working. Perfect ..!

Do one thing now ..!

Unplug all the cables from your old system and then press the power button for 30 sec and let it go. Now plug the keyboard, mouse and the monitor try again.
If it works Perfect. If not ..!

Then you need to open the tower and check on the processor FAN is it running..? If its not running you will not get the display as the fan is responsible for the display on the screen. Otherwise...!

Check the Tower possibly the Tower is not getting the power.

Try these steps and let me know If it works

I MOVED FROM GA TO AZ AND HAD MY COMPAQ SHIPPED ALONG WITH A LOT OF CABLES, ETC. I HAVE NO IDEA HOW TO PUT THIS TOGETHER TO GET ONLINE. PRETEND I'M FIVE YEARS OLD AND YOU'RE HELPING ME I HAVE A MONITOR,...

It can be intimidating when looking at a huge mass of wires and stuff, but not to worry, it may be a little time consuming, but is is all logical.
First set the monitor on the desk and plug it in to the wall. then take the second cable that has a million little prongs sticking out of the retangular plug and hang it to where the Case is going to sit. Put the case where you want it close to or on the desk. look at the back of the case, the cable that is coming from the monitor can only fit 1 socket in the back of the pc.
Now, 10% done!!! that wasn't hard!
Now put the mouse and keyboard on the desk and thread the cords through the back of the desk to the pc. Usually, the pc has two sockets right next to each other right on the top of the case in back, that are round and the size of a dime. That is where the keyboard and mouse plug in. Look at the back of the pc for color coding of plug color to socket color or look for pictures of which cable goes in which socket.
Ok, now find the big thick black cable that plugs into the wall and ends in a big thick square. Plug it into the power supply of the pc. It only fits one place.
Plug it into the wall now.
Now all you should have is speakers and a printer.
Look at the speakers, Depending if they are standard, or 5.1 dolby surround, they either have 1 or 3 plugs that go into the pc. Plug the speakers into the wall, then look at the back of the pc for 3 small holes. one should be labled, speakers. There is line in and microphone as well. plug in the speakers...... ,
Ok, printer, funky thick plug, or usb cable..... Either one, look at the back of the pc, it only goes in one spot!!
TADA

Now, you need to plug in the internet stuff. plug the router to the walll, connect to phone line or cable, then plug in the cable that looks like a big (usually yellow) phone cable. Plug it into the network card plug on the back of the pc.

Surf, have fun.
PLEASE VOTE 4 THUMBS FOR ME!!!!!!
Good luck and have fun.
James.

My card reader on my computer has stopped working!? ok i took my computer in to my computer teacher to get it fixed, well she put in a second hard drive in and said it should fine. well it does but...

Ah, My Bad, big_dude2010, perfectly understandable about the budget thing. The world is in an economic crisis right now.

As for reattaching the Card Reader cable, can't help you.

OH, I'm just PLAYIN'!

Before we go ANY further:

1) Computer off, and unplugged from power.

Unplug the power cable FROM the surge protector, and NOT plugged into the surge protector, and take it out of the back of the Power Supply.

With the power cable plugged into the surge protector, and unplugging it out of the Power Supply, you could create a voltage spike.

Result can burn out the Power Supply, and may go on to burn out the Processor, Motherboard, Ram Memory, and a graphics card. (IF used)

Many have stated, that they do this all the time. Eventually, they come back to state they fried out their power supply, and/or motherboard, and so on.

2) Computer unplugged from power, computer case open, TOUCH the metal frame of the computer case to relieve your body of Static electricity.

Static can fry out, (Short Circuit), the delicate hardware components inside your computer.
(For this reason also work on a table. If you have a carpet floor, refrain from swinging your feet back, and forth.
If you get up, walk away, then return, TOUCH the metal frame again)

If you already know the above, please disregard.

The Card Reader cable has a white sheath, and is approximately as thick as a No.2 pencil.

It should have 8 wires in it.
Orange, Yellow, Blue, Brown, Red, White, Green, and Black.

It will have a white rectangular connector on one end, that has 10 socket holes. 2 rows of 5 holes.
Only 8 socket holes are used.

The other end of the cable should have a Black connector. It also has 10 socket holes. 2 rows of 5 holes. This connector plugs into the circuit board of the Card Reader.

The White connector end plugs into the motherboard. It plugs into the Front USB 1 header on the motherboard.

(Connector on a motherboard is referred to as a Header)

Orienting the motherboard, so we are both looking at it in the same direction.
Processor to the top. Ram Memory slots to the right.
There are 3 white PCI slots down towards the bottom.

The white PCI slot that is closest to the edge of the motherboard, is PCI3. (PCI 3)

Down below the PCI 3 slot is a blue header. NOT the one you want.
That's for the audio ports in the front of the computer. (Front Panel)

To the right of the blue header, is a white header. This is the one you want. Front USB1. (The Front USB1 header, is below the Right/Bottom corner of the PCI 3 slot)

Note that there are 5 pins going along the top of the Front USB 1 header, and 4 pins going along the bottom.

The missing pin, or blank spot, helps you to orient the white connector of the card reader cable.

The card reader cable's white connector also has a missing socket hole, or blank spot.

There is No slot on the header for the motherboard, and No locating lug on the Card Reader cable's, white connector.

Line the card reader cable connector's blank spot, up with the blank spot on the Front USB1 header.

This is HP Support, and the Motherboard Specifications page, for the Compaq Presario SR1303WM Desktop PC,

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00069442&tmp_task=prodinfoCategory&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&lang=en&product=447312

Scroll down the page about halfway, and you'll see an illustration of your motherboard.

(To enlarge it for better viewing, you can right-click right on it, then in the drop down menu, left-click on - Save As
Put this in your My Pictures folder.

Then go to My Pictures, and double-click on the illustration of the motherboard.
Now go below in the window, and click on the + sign to Zoom In.
Use the bottom, and side bar, to move it around to the view you want)

Below the illustration is an actual photograph of the motherboard, with no hardware components installed.

The Black connector that goes to the circuit board of the Card Reader, plugs in like this.

There are four wires across the top. There are five wires across the bottom.

Looking INSIDE your computer, TOWARDS the Card Reader circuit board, the four wires go on top, when plugged in. (Not shouting)

Again, looking at the back of the Card Reader, the color code of the wires on the top, going from Left to Right, are:
Thin Black wire, Green, White, and Red.

Wires going along the bottom, starting from Left going Right,
Thick Black wire, Brown, Blue, Yellow, and Orange

Power cable end had red, white and Black wires came of the pin holes

You probably shouldn't attempt to repair the cord. I would suggest you purchase a new power cord (they aren't too expensive). You could really damage your laptop if you incorrectly insert the wires.

I need to replace my ide drive on my compaq presario 5000 but i cant seem to locate it could you help me out?

HI,

ON the 5000 series there are two possibly three ide drives on the machine. Once you have the front bezel off, and the remove the side panel, you will find near the top of the machine the ide cdrom drive, and possible another cdrom or tape backup ide drive. Below those one or two drives is your hard drive (ide). To remove them, you will need to unplug the power cable, which is the white plastic plug with the multiple color wires going into it. Then remove the grey wide cable which is your ide cable. Do not remove the other end of the cable from the motherboard. Remove which every ide drive you want to replace and install the new one, and be sure to hook up the ide cable and power supply back into the same positions as before.

Thanks

Mark
