Re: HP pavilion zd8000 start-up problem.
Try to unplug all the PCI cards and boot, if its still doing it check the ram. If its still doing it check to see if the power supply is good. If all that fails, It could be eather a bad mother board or bad processor.

Possibly overheating, or (hoping not to be obvious) flat battery? are you on mains?
try leaving it off for an hour see how far it gets, if its not getting as far as starting your OS then its a hardware problem, either overheating or possibly bad memory RAM
if it comes on in an hour, and stays on, check you were not blocking the cooling venr, (happens using laptops in bed)
if it comes on and goes off again after a period of use then try sucking the vent out with a hoover.
as somethings causing overheating.
if still dead, take it to a repairer
I had a similar problem with my pavilion. They have a cooling fan design that allows for lint buildup and subsequent overheating. You could try using a compressed air and blowing out the exhaust vent area for the fans.
Try just the power supply fromt he wall to the laptop without the battery inserted. If it comes on and then turns off, you probably have a bad power connection. DC power jack may be bad and would need to be replaced or re-soldered.
