Changed Ports and keyboard still won't function. It started out with the middle row of keys not working, now the entire keyboard will not function. I've had the board for about 6 months. Bought it from Staples

Then most likely the keyboard is still under warranty, and you will want to go through the manufacturer to have it repaired/replaced. I assume you tried a different keyboard and that one works fine on the computer? Was any moisture introduced to the keyboard. This is usually the case of this happening. If you need any other assistance let me know. Please take a moment to accept and rate my solution accordingly.

HI,

The problem is with the cable of your keyboard.
You will have to get this keyboard replaced.
I hope this is under warranty

I suggest you to once try connecting this keyboard to a different PC and then let me know if its works or not.

  • Priya darshan Oct 03, 2008

If the keyboard still doesn't work then there are no home remedies to fix this issue as the fault is with the cable of your keyboard which cannot be repaired. You will have to buy or replace your keyboard with a new one.

Why doesnt the third row of keys on my keyboard do not workk

The keyboard itself is defective. The keys are "strung" together in groupings. The T just happens to be on another string then the top row.. To verify you can easly hook up an external keyboard and verify that it works. Once verified it all works then the problem itself will be in the keyboard. Replace the keyboard. You can easly find them online and are not that expensive or hard to replace.

Hey Kerry!

Is it possible that you or your children have pressed the key combination to turn off the external monitor, or all monitors?

Look at the top row of keys, the Function Keys. You will see that along with the key name, like F5, there is another bit of text in a different color, a color keyed to a key on the bottom row of your keyboard, called the Function Key. It probably has only Fn on it, in orange, or a similar color to the alternate text on the top row of Function Keys, F1 through F12.

Each of those top row keys controls something different on the laptop.

One of them cycles through using the laptop's monitor, using an external monitor, or using both/neither. It also may be a different key which tells the laptop to use a connected projector, as in when you give a presentation and need to increase the size of the image you are putting on the screen at the end of the room, or table.

Carefully, one key at a time, hold down the Fn key at the lower left of the keyboard, and touch the Function Key on the top row which seems to correspond to the monitor, to turn it off, switch to an external, or switch to a projector. In addition, there is a set of two keys which will turn the image darker, such that it won't show up at all, and then one nearby which does the opposite, turns the image back to viewable again.

It is entirely possible that these keys have been toggled such that any combination will remove display from your computer screen or any external you plug in.

In addition, be sure that your external monitor is plugged into a monitor adapter on the laptop, because the serial adapter on the back looks the same, and will even allow you to plug the monitor into it. But it will not only not work for the monitor, it can burn it out completely.

Check them all. Find the laptop's manual and in the back look for Troubleshooting, in which section there should be a list of what to do and how to do it, to remedy extraneous key presses which can ruin your whole day, week, or even year!

Cheers!

it's more likely you haven't put the ribbon cable back properly. try removing the keyboard again and reinsert the ribbon cable carefully - remeber there is a bable grip that needs to opened to remove the cable and closed again after insertion to maintain contact

I have a sony vaio lalptop and some letters are not working at all: 9,o,l,,,. (I am on another laptop). Help

Hi treborswindl
Look on the keyboard to see whether any of the function keys on the top row are on. If so, you have to turn it off.
How do you do it?
Locate the [FN] key at the bottom (this is the function key between the [CTRL] and [WIN] keys.
Hold down the [FN] key and the numbered function key which is on ( for example F11 ) the top row which is lit.
Goto Microsoft word or Notepad and try out your keys.
Hope this will work for you.
Good luck

Microsoft Wireless Multimedia Keyboard 1.1 not working

Could be spyware or a virus. Try this.........If this does not help let me know.

Turn the system restore off. System restore keeps everything in restore. Meaning......... If you have spyware or a virus, it will stay in your system. Run Spybot S&D (This program is free and is better than using msconfig as long as you go through the settings and change everything to the highest settings.) Then do the same with Adaware 2008 (sounds stupid to use 2 things for spyware, but one catches what the other one does not.). I have links on my website (tandnfamilyelectronics-online.com). These links go directly to the download so you will not get the run around. You would do good to try a program called Window Washer. This is a great program that completely cleans anything in your computer that you do not need. It will not clean out anything that you have to have. I have used this for years to clean out my customers computers and have cleaned as much as 3 gigs of trash out. If you contact me I will give you some tools that I have for free that will do a great job on your computer. I have them ready to download and I will give you the link. Notebook Keyboard, some Keys doesn't Work. Replace the entire Keyboard??

Remove the keyboard and check if the cable is plugged into the laptop correctly which is usually not the case. Usually the keys may have been damaged and you may have to buy a keyboard replacement.
