Acer travelmate 4670

The seagate hard drive stopped working and I have replaced it with a Western digital 320g drive.
I have reloaded XP from the disk that was made when I first got the laptop and all look fine except that I cannot use the keyboard with any program the mouse is ok but cannot type anything ist as though the keyboard does not exist .
I have run Ubuntu Linux from the CD and the unit works perfectly.
I would appreciate your advice

Have you tried to update the chip set drivers? If not try this and see if that gets it going.

You might have a usb keyboard requiring a usb 2.0 driver. If no other usb device has worked with xp since you replaced your hard drive, that could be the point of failure.

Make sure you have installed windows xp service pack 2 to get the usb 2.0 driver.

Please tell me if it worked. Thanks.

I have two identical Dell Inspiron 6000 that have had hard disc failure... each after the warranty expired.. is it worth replaceing hard drive, or should spend the money and time on new machine?

Hard drives are worth replacing. Its cheaper compaired to buying a new notebook. You can even choose a larger hdd according to your preference. I suggest you buy a seagate because it has a better quality and has 2 yrs. of warranty

How to migrate Vista Home(OEM licence) to new HDD?

You don't have to migrate anything.
You simply clone the hard drive.
Each manufacturer usually has utilities on their site that facilitate this.
For instance, if you bought a Western Digital hard drive, go to their site and download the disk management software. Same for Seagate.

I have an acer aspire 3680 laptop and I get disk read error every time I power up the laptop and can't perform any other task. How can I fix this? My os is vista.

A Disk read error on boot means your hard disk has or is about to fail. to verify this you can try to fun a hard disk testing utility such as Seagate SeaTools, Western Digital Data Lifeguard, Hitachi DFT. These are all freeware.

A hard disc error is preventing windows from starting, Then opening up the start up repair problem details says; problem event name startup repairv2 problem signature 01 ...

the hard drive should have diagnostics under the bios run on it..

get in the setup area right at the beginning on the starting process... like hit F2.. right away at boot up

see if there are built in diagnostics for testing your hard drive... this is usually the case

if not

get a copy of seagate or western digital diagnostics testing software and place the software correctly on a cd... boot from the cd... and execute the diagnostics on the hard drive in the laptop

this will determine if the drive is good or not

tell me the answer and we will solve the problem from there

Chach at any local Acer spares shop. Ususally the drives are available with most computer parts vendors. In you have no luck call Acer and order it from theire sales department.

If you know the brand of hard drive you can download their setup and recover homepage Ive done it many times. If its a seagate go to seagate.com look for software or support and so on. let me know if this was what you needed . good luck dc.

My ACER laptop does a system check every time I start it up

I would be concerned as well. Sounds to me like a hard drive that is about to go bad. If you can get into windows, click Start > Run > and type "CMD" to open a command prompt. After that enter CHKntfs /X C: and press enter. That should stop the startup check disk from running.

I would also recommend that you run a defrag, and also use the Western Digital DLG program, it will tell you if you have any disk errors and if you need to replace the Hard Drive. Here's the link:

I just used this tool last week to fix a customer's laptop for them. Works great and is on the money.

Ive installed 160gb seagate 2.5 ide hard drive in my acer 2303lc when i put in recovery cd it says invalid system disk, replace the disk and press any key but when i press the key nothing happens ,its a new...

Hey,

Do you have more of those recovery discs? are you sure you have the right one inserted?

I remember on my acer I first had to enter a system disc, then when asked the two recovery discs.

If your unable to get it working with those cds I would suggest you get your hands on a original windows xp or vista installation cd and install windows from it.

also have you tried to enter the boot menu on start up? when you power up it says on some corner of the screen what button to press to get it to open the boot menu and then select the cd/dvd rom drive.

Let me know if you need anything else.

Thanks,
Ekse
