go to start>program files/all programs>yahoo/yahoo messenger>right click on the yahoo messenger icon and click send to>desktop *create shortcut* than the icon should be there again, unless your saying the picture for the icon disappeared, than you right click>properties click the thing that says change icon, once the box shows up with the icon double click it then hit okay right click your desktop click refresh and it will reappear.
It will be best if you download and install the latest copies again, of both of those. This will fix any problems, after each install reboot. I suspect they are damaged. OR do a system restore, at bootup press F8 when menu comes up choose safe made desktop, now at next selection, you'e asked, safe mode desktop, OR System Restore, choose system Restore, and when a calender like window shows, simply choose a DATE BEFORE you had this problem, follow instructions and it will reboot, before long you will be back to where you started.
I can't tell how yahoo messanger has anything to do with your desktop becoming black or viceversa but yahoo messanger can be redownloaded and install using the following link http://messenger.yahoo.com/download/
although I suggest you look for the program and uninstall the program first..
